  The best thing you could do is go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different guitars, since each one will have its own feel. It's possible to find a good, playable guitar for around $100, or even less if you consider buying used for find one that's on sale. But most guitars specifically marketed for beginners have really fat necks and high action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard), which makes them nearly impossible to play. I'm a huge fan of Ibanez guitars, which are built like rocks, sound great and are often nicer than guitars costing twice as much. They've also got really thin necks and low action, which makes it easier for beginners and people with small hands to move comfortably from chord to chord.
