What note does a soprano saxophone tune to?

Soprano saxophone information please?

  • Hi, I've been playing the saxophone for about 4 years now I'm 14 years old and have expierience playing alot sax and also the tenor sax I tried a soprano once because I was very intrested but the one that I had did not work right the person who lent it to me said it needed to be fixed. Well I got a hold of a good soprano that I'm testing out. I'm using a B5 mouthpiece, and a 2 1/2 reed for starters. I have a few problems I was hoping someone could help me with. First when I hit the low E and D it wavers like its out of tune its almost gone now but now completely the person who gave it to me said it does that when the mouthpiece is not in the right position but I dont know where to put it. Also I can't make the middle B flat key play, is there a differnt fingering for this than the alto or tenor? And can I use either alto music or tenor to play on soprano? Please is anyone knows a place to get free music off the internet like scales for me or something I would loe it! Thank you so much!

  • Answer:

Well, low E and D sounding wavery is normal for a beginning soprano player, since those are some hard notes to get out properly on that particular instrument. Your mouthpiece and reed choices should be just fine for now. The Bb key sounds like a horn problem, maybe there's a leak, since the fingering is the same on any sax, soprano, alto, tenor, etc. You can play tenor music on a soprano with no troubles since they are both in the key of Bb, while alto is in Eb, so it might sound funny. Scales and exercises, you could use any saxophone book, since all saxes play the same scales regardless of their key. I'm very happy to hear about a 14-year-old picking up soprano. I started doubling that year, and it's been sooooo convenient and useful for me to play more than one instrument. Keep playing and practicing, and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun!
