How much does it cost to move a piano across the country?

  • It's a spinnet (an upright piano) and we'd be moving it from Texas to California. Anybody got any ideas how much it would cost to hire a professional piano mover to move it that far?

    Texas to Cali? What parts? I would not try to move it if you are changing temps too much. The wood in a piano can swell with humidity, then you just re-tune. However, if the piano has been in a humid environment and you move to a desert, the wood will shrink, and my crack. It can ruin a piano. When we moved our piano we just rolled it onto the truck last with lots of padding. Then we drove it and the whole house from Utah to Maryland. We re-tuned it about 3 months after we got there (it needed it!) so it had time to settle. Good Luck.

From Texas to California that's not across the county, unless you made a mistake. I would get estimates from different movers, go through your phone book and see who will do it for the least amount !!!

I am not sure but if you trust an insured trucking company I believe my husband calls it a back haul .If a transport company's home depot was california and they were delivering to texas then they can ship it cheaper because after they delivered in texas they would be empty so you are saving them fuel. Why? Because the van would otherwise be empty so you're paying them which helps with fuel costs. Just ask the trucking co. for an transport van coming back to california empty. hope that helps. mrsreid I believe a de-humidifier or humidifier and light in piano resolves all those problems wouldn't they?
