What should I use as spot markers for marching band?
-
Marching band season is fastly approaching! I need some **spot markers for the new season! (for those of you who don't know what spot markers are, see definition at footnote) Last season I used dive sticks, but they sometimes were disguised in the grass on the field. I need something that I could: -step on(not absolutely necessary, but makes things easier) -can get wet -will stand out in grass -isn't huge, so if someone steps on it they won't break their neck or the object itself I haven't a clue what to use this year! Any suggestions? **Spot Markers are small objects that I can place in each spot to which I am to move on the field throughout a song. They are meant so I can see where to go until I remember.

I've used poker chips. However, depending on the quality of your field, they still might get lost. I'd say, use poker chips but spay paint them all bright orange (like the kind of orange you see construction guys use. It stands out on the grass/dirt/turf/white lines, etc). You can get poker chips at places like Walmart or anywhere that sells playing cards really. The spray paint can be bought at any home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot. What I suggest doing as well is on each chip, write in sharpie some sort of an identification like initials or position number so that all those chips belong to one person. Then, write along with it something to keep track of drill page number like 1, 2, 3 (or A, B, C if you prefer). Here's an example: My first flute in my drills are labeled as F1. Anywhere on my drill, when I say, "Where's F1?", it's going to be that same person all the time. She would have the chips in her chip bag all with "F1" written on all of them. I would say, "Go to your position on page 1 of the drill and drop chip 1." She would then drop the chip labled "F1 - 1". Then I'd say, "Go to your position on page 2 of the drill and drop chip 2". She would then proceed. Then I'd say, "Go to number 1. You have 16 counts (or whatever) to get to number 2." and count them off. It's a lot of work and if you choose to do it like that, fine. I tried it but kids would lose the chips, forget it, etc. that I just go do it without it. I also have heard of directors using washers ("shiners", if you will...the metal kind) instead of poker chips because they're heavier than plastic poker chips.

we used plastic poker chips. like white, red, and blue ones so theyll stand out. they worked really good.

My band doesnt use spot markers. No offense, but if you need spot markers to figure out where you are supposed to be, then you are not very good. (Not trying to be mean or anything) My director just makes us do it over and over and over again, each time marking off where we should end up, and then we have a better idea. By the time competitions role around, we are near perfect. And, a tip, your not suposed to focus on the spot you end up. Just make sure that you are watching your Drum Majors, playing your music corectly, and make sure that you end up in line with your other marching family members. If you end up in the spot that is right on your drill chart, but everyone else in your line is farther up than you, then you are the one who is wrong. The judges are not going to be looking at a copy of your drill chart. They are going to be making sure that everyone looks uniform.

Our band uses different colored spray paint. It washes off eventually, but you should have your spots down by the time it washes away. I think spray paint will be best for the entire band to use. And to the above poster who said that your band isn't that good if you can' t know your spots without a marker, you're unbelievably incorrect. My band is THE best in our region, and I'm not just talking crap. And what do we do? We use spray paint to mark our spots. However, you were correct in saying that you should pay more attention to the form than your spot....good job with that one. ***Edited: well instead of spray paint, could you use golf tees? Just stick them down in the ground...and spray paint the golf tee so it will be noticable. They can be removed and placed in a new spot when you need to move them and since they're pushed into the ground nobody will trip on them.******

ive seen people use sticky notes but they got wet and soggy ive seen people stick pencils in the ground with colorful duct tape 'flags' on them ive seen screwdrivers with colorful handles stuck in the ground ive also seen random school supplies (scissors w? bright handle, pens, pencils, compasses, rulers, etc. stuck in or layed on the ground) just use something small but bright/colorful from around your house or school LONG LIVE MARCHING BAND!!!!
