Guitar - Finger Picking help?
-
I've been learning how to play guitar at school and I'm pretty good at strumming. But when it comes down to finger picking, oh man... it sucks. I know the basics like thumb plays bass strings and fingers 1, 2, and 3 play the 3 high strings. But I still need help. Any sites, videos, etc. on finger picking for beginners would be nice. Any advice you can give me, other than practice, is welcome. Any beginner finger picking songs for practicing would be nice too.

www.justinguitar.com I love this site. I used to stink at guitar, but this site shows you everything. I used to be terrible at finger picking too but if you watch some of his videos you will eventually get better.

Try learning the Spanish Ballard. It helped me with finger picking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oE7fQyftPq8 EDIT: A tip I can give you is, on your fret hand, make sure you finger nails are short. Makes it easier to move across the neck of the guitar. Your picking hand, the nails should be a little long. It helped me out when my fingers just didn't have the strength to play a note (mainly my ring finger). Good Luck and don't give up!

Practice, practice and more practice. You have to train the fingers of your picking hand to move independently, and the only way to do it is to build muscle memory through hours and hours of practice over the course of weeks or months.

Practice, practice, and more practice. For a while I had more trouble with finger picking, and I picked up the song By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North (Also, Hurt by Johnny Cash, Christmas Song by Flyleaf are a few easy patterns I picked up). It has a repeating pattern, and no complicated fretting. Start slow. Don't get so frustrated because it's hard. One technique I have found works is the 21 day method. The idea is that in 21 days, it will become burned in. Muscle memory. So if you have a song that you want to learn with a picking pattern, get a metronome and play every day at a speed you can play the song perfectly. Good Luck. c:

I found that a guitar that has strings spaced too close together makes it harder to finger pick. A classical guitar is a nice guitar to learn how to finger pick. It is up to you if you want to play in the classical style/method with the foot rest and guitar placement.

Try practicing hitting single strings with each finger accurately

Is it not that really, what you need to do is just practice?
