How do you get an agent?

How do I get an agent?

  • My family is.. can I say.. poor? As an 8 person family living in a 4 bedroom house, we manage. However, I have this dying urge to act on television. I have wanted to since I was 6. I am 12 now and I haven't been able to get into a single play. I would audition much more than I do, but: 1. My mom works three jobs for my family which doesn't leave her much time to help me out with that. 2. Plays I audition for cost $200 give or take a little to get into! Acting is my dream and I don't know how I can achieve in the condition my family is in. I want to be a young actress not one after I have gone to college or anything. Everywhere I look it tells me "get a good agent" "get an agent" "you need an agent". I can't even imagine what my mom would say if I asked her for an agent. I mean.. they're expensive aren't they.. "How do I get an agent" is not my main question.. it's more of how do I get into acting. Please help me if you can.. acting is my dream.

If acting is your dream go and find the best acting/drama teacher at your school or the local high school or drama society and begin there.... It will cost you nothing and you will find that YOU SHOULD NOT PAY FOR AUDITIONS!!!! Get as much experience as you can with people who can help you in your local community first... If you are good at what you do you can only get better and word will get around....there are no shortcuts... You don't pay for agents,. agents find you work and make a commisson off the work they get you. Most agents will want a portfolio which is usually lots of photgraphs of you with a list of the acting work you have done....so they can tell their clients your experience... If you have no experience then you must go and find a fantastic drama teacher with a great reputation... (Don't worry about the agent until you can show a whole list of things you have done...) Good people will recommend you....or help you... Some people that call themselves agents will tell you that you need photos and try and charge a lot of money for them... AVOID T HEM and this does not EVEN guarantee you will get into TV...anyway. You need to surround yourself with good actors of all ages who will help you and a teacher who is a professional actor who will guide you and advise you.. Do this first and ask as many questions.... if you find all the actors in your community they will tell you if there is a part in a play....or a commercial here- and a good drama society can help you to get a portfolio together at little cost....Get into acting first and dont worry about an agent yet..............first things first!!!. With your enthusiasm and passion I am sure there will be good people to help you with your dream...but if anyone asks YOU for money AVOID them... Get your experience first.

Never pay for an agent. They get paid when they get work for you. Dont let they take your money.

I must ask you this (and in turn, you might want to ask yourself this): if acting is your dream, why is it so important to you that it happen before you go to college? To use your words, "a young actress." I would think, if it is really your dream, it wouldn't make a difference what age you happened to be when it came true. With that being said, I do admire your ambition. That's a great thing, and don't lose it. For the time being (because you are so young -- and I know you didn't want to hear that), it is hard to find opportunities for you to act. If you have found those audition opportunities (which you mentioned), are you doing anything to try to raise the money yourself? Another girl on Yahoo! Answers had a similar predicament, and she decided to start her own "mother's helper" business to raise money to pursue her dreams. Her Mom was a single parent and couldn't afford to help her financially. If people are okay with you babysitting at age 12, then do that. Save your money for your auditions. When you get into junior high and high school, many more opportunities will open up for you in terms of acting in plays, etc. Devour them. Take every chance you get. You need the experience to make it worth while to have an agent. Lack of money might not be your only obstacle to getting an agent -- lack of experience might be another obstacle that only time can solve. I know you're raring to go, and you're young, and hopeful and impatient, and you want your dream RIGHT NOW!!! That makes it difficult for you. But everything happens in its own time for a reason. Take this time to study everything you can about acting and drama and plays. Here's a free opportunity that you can put to use right now -- have your parents take you to the public library. Find books about acting, and actresses. Read plays and monologues. You're going to need to know this stuff sometime anyway, if this is really what you want to do! Now is the perfect time! Read them, memorize parts -- perform them in front of the mirror, perform them for family and friends. You need as much practice as you can get, because you can never have enough. Finally, don't let your circumstances get you down. There is a reason for everything. Your family's financial circumstance just might be a sign to you that you need to spend some time hitting the books before you hit the stage. Good luck!
