I want to start a band?
-
ok, so im a 15 year old guy, and ive been playing guitar for 3 years, and i want to start/ join a band. im into hard rock, classic rock, blues-rock, and heavy metal, and can play piano a little (been taking lessons for about 3 to 5 months) and could sing backup vocals, but the main problem is im homeschooled, so outside of church and baseball, i don't a whole bunch of musicians who would want to be in a metal band. i know one guy whos a good friend of mine and plays guitar, but hes already in a band, so idk if he would want to, but im thinking about asking him. ive only had 2 musical experiences, one which is a church youth praise band that is soon to be started, right now we have 2 singers, myself and a temprary drummer, and one musical project with my cousin who lives about an 1 1/2 hours away who sings and im gonna start teaching him guitar via skype or facetime. weve only written songs together, and even if i could find a bassist, guitarist, and drummer, he still would have to travel 1 1/2 hours and back anytime we needed to practice and for gigs, so a band with him would be a little unrealistic. so my question is can anyone give me tips on finding other musicians? being in a band is my dream, im absoulutely in love with playing guitar, and want to play professionally.

Dude I'm so jealous that you're just embarking on your music career. I remember being your age and feeling the excitement of playing in a band for the first time. Oh to be young again! The key to finding musicians is to ask EVERYBODY. Use Facebook, Myspace, put notices up in your school, place adverts in your local guitar shop, speak to your music teacher etc. Anything. Musicians are a friendly bunch and like to stick together, You'll be amazed at how many people play guitar but keep it a secret. You've actually got a massive advantage over previous generations in that you're able to use social networking tools that didn't exist 10 years ago. The other thing to remember is that it's not uncommon for people to play in 2 or more bands. You'll often find that drummers have 3 or 4 bands on the go simultaneously. Don't be afraid to approach people that already play in bands. One final bit of advice; if you find a good drummer do everything in your power to keep them sweet. They are few and far between! Guitarists are ten a penny but good drummers are worth looking after. Good look and make sure you never give up music.

When I joined a band, I started an account on a website where people put up music ads or wants. For example, someone would say 'I need a vocalist' or you can put 'I am a vocalist that would like to join a band'. I formed a band this way and was with them for a whole year. It was fantastic. It's also a great way to meet new people. As nerve racking as it was at first, I do not regret one moment of it. :D

Start small, you need to start off with two or three people and grow from that. My best advice as far as finding musicians is going to small gigs wherever you live and mingle, majority of the people actually play instruments and probably live relatively nearby. Since you play guitar I would suggest teaching one of the singers how to play bass and have your cousin play rhythm. You will need a lot of practice before playing in front of an audience and I also suggest playing a set list of songs maybe 3 covers and 2 original, I wouldn't play anymore than 4 or 5 songs so you don't lose the attention of the audience. I would play small shows, maybe a battle of the bands or something of that nature to get popularity and who knows where it goes from there. Good luck. If you ever make it big, I want some tickets to a show haha

Hang around your local guitar or music shops and talk to people with similar interests in music. Go to concerts and meet people there. You could also post an add on Facebook or MySpace.
Put an ad in the paper or around local schools or music stores where other musicians meet. Be clear about your wants and needs and level of experience.

Maybe you could sit in on your friends band sessions. Or maybe record yourself and put it on Youtube. SOMEONE will watch! (People watch my stupid fish aquarium webcam) So I am sure someone will watch you! good luck!

Check out your local craigslist.org - click the "musician" section, and either search for your missing band members, or put up a (free) ad yourself.
