Answer:
It's never too late to follow your dreams. Look into some different auditions or contests. Just remember that your life doesn't end after 25. 31 is still young, and, although it is a shame you were always held back by an uncaring parent, you still have a chance. If singing makes you happy, go for it and never let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Just try to pick and choose carefully. There are lots of opportunities for every generation available. Good luck!

If you love singing, then by all means, do it. Do it as much and in as many places as you can. Go to open mikes, perform for supportive friends, find musical gatherings and song circles where you can share your talents and get feedback. Take lessons, practice, and hone your craft. Do everything you can think of to nurture and grow your talent, and to support it with loving, positive feedback from people who love you and believe in you and your dream. If you love competing, then do that too. Be sure you are doing it for the joy of singing and of performing at your best. Be sure you're *not* doing it because you need to win or get positive feedback to feel validated. And please, please, before you compete, develop a strong inner sense of your own worthiness, and your resilience to criticism. No matter how great you are, and how well you do in any given competition, eventually someone will say something negative. You need to be prepared to take it in stride, or it can hurt you and kill your dream. If you choose to compete, you want the competition to feed and nurture you, and not to be a potential source of harm. This is a challenge for virtually every artist. And you may be particularly vulnerable to it, given your background of unsupportive messages from your dad. When you're emotionally secure, competitions can be a wonderful way to improve your skills and, if you're really at the top of your game, to eventually find recognition and opportunities. Be prepared to compete many times and learn something new each time ... and to enjoy the process. Ideally, you want to be able to to keep negative feedback in perspective. If one or two people say something negative, but most are positive, then you don't need to concern yourself with the negative ones. On the other hand, if you hear the same criticism from several people, then that may be an area where you want to go to work and develop your skills. But in neither case should you take it as an attack on who you are, or as an indictment of your ability to do what you love and pursue your dream. It's just feedback, and feedback taken in perspective can help us to grow. So start by finding as many ways as you can to bolster your self-confidence and self-belief, and when you feel ready to compete ... because it's fun for you, and you want to learn from it ... then go for it ... and have a blast!

It's a shame your dad was like that. You will have to check the rules of each competition for age requirements. I know that with American Idol, you have to be 29 or younger, and a lot of your bigger, "more important" ones here in America usually have an age cutoff around 25. This is because record companies rarely offer deals to people past their early 20's. Not fair, but the reality of it is the older you get, the more your chances of making a career of it decrease. If you are just doing it for fun, then go for it if you meet the age requirements.

Its not too late - have you been singing all along by yourself, and do you know what your voice can do? If you are comfortable with your voice, and think you can put on a confident performance, check out the age requirement and go for it. Your love of singing will shine through, and that's one of the things they look for in competitions. Maybe get a good teacher and work some songs up for those future competitions you want to enter. You will enjoy that part very much. Shame on your Dad!

I don't want to say stupid things like "Follow your dreams" or anything because sometimes it doesn't work and I hate it when people come to other people and say your advice was bad. The thing is...you should try it. At least TRY IT. I mean if it doesn't work out then okay then but if it does good job. I want to sing...but I don't think it would be a good idea..."stage frieght" that's what I have. But if you have the potential go for it!

Get an unbiased opinion (from someone that's NOT a friend of yours), preferably from someone experienced or professional. Just because you love to sing doesn't necessarily mean you're good at it. I wouldn't recommend a competition unless you've had a lot of experience, training, and especially talent. I don't think 30 is too late to start. People's voices sometimes really develop later in life, depending on their style of singing.
