I know a method that really works. My mom uses it all the time. Put the tips of your fingers on the sides of your face near your lips, buzz with your lips and buzz an arpeggio. For example, D,F#, A, D,F#, A, G,E, C#,A, G, E,D ANd you do that while buzzing your lips. It gets you up to a twelth!!

you should really consider a vocal coach. Anyway, practice...practice a lot!!!!! (but dont stress your voice by making it go out of its range) Try lying on the floor with books on your stomach, use your Diaphragm to push the books up and down...this will make your voice stronger and your Diaphragm. You should pick a higher note that you cant quite hit but dont go crazy and pick something outrageous and everday try and hit your selected notes, but climb to it by using scales...dont just try to hit it randomly. Warm up your voice...this will help a ton!!!! Also, just a side note...you probably shouldn't sing a song you are uncomfortable with for an audition, you should do something you sing with ease, shows off your range, and fits the character well. Hope I helped! Break a leg!!!!!!!!

Well, singing is a technical thing and also a spiritual/emotional thing. I am going to talk to you about technique. When you sing in your mid range, (and assuming you are breathing correctly from your diaphram) you should be placing your notes in the middle of the roof of your mouth so that they project out off of your tongue. As you go higher, you need to imagine that the sound is moving forward on the roof of your mouth towards the back of your teeth. And as you go lower the sound should be placed moving backwards along the top of the roof of your mouth. Try it. Imagine this as you practice your scales and it will show you how high you can go without tightening your neck muscles around your vocal chords. Be relaxed and you may surprise yourself.

First you have to determine what type of voice you have. Are you a Soprano, Mezzo soprano or Mezzo aka Contralto. If your natural vocal range does not include the higher notes you could destroy what singing voice you have! I am a bass-baritone and would love to sing in the tenor range, but my voice does not have the ability. I am not a tenor. You cannot sing unless you know how to breathe. Test youself in the mirror. Sing something. Watch two things. One. Does your neck get all tight and the chords of your neck stick out as you try for a high note? If they do then stop trying for the high notes now! Two. When you take in a breath to sing, do you shoulders rise up when you inhale? If they do, stop again. Singing involves pushing air over the vocal chords to produce the sound. You do not want to force the note out of the vocal chords like a scot playing the bagpipes. You need to learn how to breathe from the tummy, the diaphragm. That magical muscle that inflates the lungs everytime you breathe. It acts like an accordian. All singers learn to breathe first. Then you start scales, arpeggios and the rest. Spend a few bucks and find a good voice coach. Consult a local choir, university or glee club for a vocal coach. A vocal coach can teach you how to breathe, bring the voice forward so you are not singing flat and improve your tone, and teach you diction. Matchmaker is full of words that need to be pronounced, evey single one of them for the audience to hear. Daunting? Not at all. Singing is fun but it is work. Take the time to learn the basics now for a lifetime of enjoyment.

First off, everyone has given great suggestions and advise thus far. Second, all of us need help in singing - we can't do it alone! I was started at age two by my parents, who are both very musically inclined. I wasn't pushed by any means, but allowed to develop. If you really want to progress then you will eventually need a teacher/instructor. That said, a word of caution about online advice. Although a lot of people are giving great advice I'm sure most of it has you scratching your head and going 'huh?' That's because singing is a visual as well as hearing thing. To be able to give you proper instruction it would take demonstrations that you can both hear and see. There are certain techniques and breathing postures you should know and without doing these properly you could potentially hurt yourself! Now, on to your actual question! You've decided on a part that you want - and that's great! However you should be aware that the director will place you where he or she thinks you will be best. That might not be Chava. (Who, incidentally, I was almost named after.) Also you need to pay attention to your range. You're not going to go from an alto to a soprano overnight. Or within a few weeks - at least not without any damage to your vocal cords! For some people you may not ever develop the kind of range you want. If you can sing high (soprano) and are still having trouble keep this in mind. In order to sing high you need to be breathing properly. Your mouth should be a 'cavern' for the sound, keep the space inside nice, round and open. Take good, deep breaths and let it out. Practice scales - slide up and down. Don't push yourself to do anything that feels unnatural for you. If it hurts or strains - STOP! Vocal cords are muscles and like any muscle they need to be 'warm' in order to work properly. Be sure to warm up before any attempt to practice your upper ranges. Above all practice, practice, practice! And break a leg!
