What are some good tips for getting over stage fright?
-
I want to be an movie/television actress someday and I have taken several acting classes, but even after getting used to the classes, my stage fright never goes away. It is something I want to do sooo badly and I have been told that I have a lot of potential, but I just cant seem to shake the anxiety I get every time I get on stage. Anyone have any good tips, tricks, advice?? Thanks!

One thing to remember is that almost everyone experiences stage fright and it is not at all unusual. Also, people are rarely paying as much attention to you as you think, I mean this in a good way. Allow yourself to believe that they're not really listening, this can ease some of the pressure. I linked to an article below that talks about stage fright- hope it helps- http://www.ehow.com/about_4609623_stage-fright.html

1) count!! it helps, really. count till infinity :) 2) usually, when ur experiencing stage frights, u'll feel cold. blow into ur palms. make them warm. it'll make u feel better. 3)talk and converse with people. it'll make u happy. 4) be CRAZY. like, real crazy. when ur backstage, jump about, run about!!! but make sure u don't make too much noise or trip over the lightings, wires, etc. stage frights WILL GO AWAY. trust me. i no longer suffer from stage frights. i used to...a few years ago. follow everyone's tips and u'd be fine. good luck =)

Preparation and practice are excellent advice. I've read about very successful actors/actresses that still have stage fright to some degree. So it's just that they are prepared first of all, and they are able, at some point, to become the character and get outside of "themselves." Understand that just because you have some degree of stage fright doesn't mean that you can't do a good job.

I can't give you many tips for getting rid of stage fright, since I generally don't have much of a problem with it myself, but I can tell you this: nerves are perfectly normal. To some extent, they facilitate your performance - at least you know it's not ho-hum! To be right before a performance and not have any little butterflies is (I would say) a bad sign! On the other hand, stage fright can be debilitating. One thing I would recommend is just doing it. Getting out and performing, over and over again - learning to accept the fear and just shove it out of the way and go perform. It's tricky, but I wish you all the best!

yes just like me when i'm teaching......... but that was like me also when i'm performing....... the best thing i do is -putting a coin on my shoes (2 coins) -drinking water before and after the performance -inhale-exhale -jumping 20 times -talking and lots of talk -scratching my head

there's some seasoned actors that *still* get stage fright right before a show, shot, etc. whatever. it's hard to really get rid of it all the way. before going on (stage, camera, whatever) do some deep breathing to relax, and envision yourself succeeding - the crowd laughing & cheering you on... do not think negative thoughts. while on, try not pay attention to everyone else. think of the person you're becoming (the character) & think of just *being* that person. don't think of it as a performance much less the fact that a show is being put on. ignore the audience - whomever it is.... and just do it.

Just develop your own alter ego. On the stage you are not your self who is shy and nervous but you are another you, your other character that is brave, chick or entertaining it's up to you what you wanna be. It's like what Beyonce do with her alter ego. She named her Sasha. How bout you?

Some pretty good ideas from the others. What has worked for me, is to remember what I am doing is make believe or pretend. Pretend that you are doing what the script asks for. Don't play to the audience until you have overcome the stage fright. I used to work back stage. You would be surprised at which stars vomited before going on stage. One famous violinist had his wife push him out from behind the curtain. Why don't you suggest to your class instructors to cover stage fright?

A lot of people have a problem of stage fright, and even though some people are very good, they can't do their best because of the stage fright. I think one thing you can try is to practice your act/lines really thoroughly so that you won't add to your stage fright by worrying about remembering what to do. I usually find that straight before the performance, if you think about something completely different (something positive!) it distracts you from your stage fright. Or you can talk to someone. You can also imagine how the performance will turn out (visualise your actions and how you are going to say your lines). This is a really good method for a lot of people, then when you are performing, try to focus on acting the way you visualised yourself. Apart from that, I think you should just tell yourself you can do it and believe in yourself. Good luck!

There's no easy way to get rid of stage fright, other than to get infront of people regularly. Once you do that, it WILL fade. I promise. Unfortunately, the other way for it to go away is to have a performance go horribly. Once you fail publicly, and you realize that you're not dead and everyone still likes you, it takes a lot of the pressure off. It's something you have to experience, because nobody can logically convince you that it's true until it happens. Two big things to remember: 1) The audience wants you to do well. They aren't judging you as harshly as you think. 2) Nobody can perceive your nervousness. Shaky voice, trembling hands... people won't notice it, so don't get freaked out about people knowing you're nervous because that will only make you more nervous. (Just don't hold onto a piece of paper if you're shaking -- then it'll show!)
