A good audition song?

Do you know a good audition song?

  • I audition for a lot of plays and Its always hard for me to find a good audition piece and I was wondering if any of you new any good songs that are a bit up beat, sound good on a piano, and shows some range I would like to know you thoughts on any songs. I'm not a GREAT singer, but I'm pretty sure I am a good singer. So I can handle a higher note and if it's really high then I'll work something just incase the song matches everything else. Also I'm a 12 year old girl. THANKS!!! :)

First off, dont pick something popular. The biggest culprits of that currently are Phantom, Le Miz and Wicked to name a few. But at the same time, dont pick something so obscure the people auditioning you spend the whole time wondering what your singing instead of actually listening. Second, pick something that you can relate to personally. Singing something that an elderly man sings, for example, will not connect to you and come off as unemotional. Pick a topic that a young woman can sing about. Third, dont pick something that your accompanist cant play. You want to do your best and that cant happen if they keep messing up. Plus they'll hate you forever haha. This includes stuff like West Side Story and Sweeney Todd. I'm a 17 year old mezzo sop girl and some of the ones I've had luck with are - How Lovely to Be a Woman (Bye Bye Birdie) -Shy (Once Upon a Mattress) -I Cant Say No (Oklahoma) I like to impress them and shoot em up with a classic...they like knowing you're well rounded.

Alright! Well, seeing as you mean business I'm going to come right out and say that the previous answers will get you nowhere. First, here's a list of what NOT to do: - Never a song from the show you're auditioning for - No Les Miserable - No Wicked - No West Side Story - No Rent - Never "Memory" from Cats etc. etc. etc. You get the gist. You want to be UNIQUE. Some great UNIQUE songs include: "Somethings are Meant to Be" from Little Women the Musical "Someone to Watch over Me" from Oh Kay! Break a leg ;)
