Should I try to learn Bass Guitar or Electric Guitar?
-
I really want to learn either of them. I already know how to play Clarinet, I have been doing it for a year, so I know some stuff about music. Which should I learn? I have an Electric Guitar, but I don't have a Bass. I could just buy a Bass though. What are some Pro's and Con's of both? Which is easier? What type of music can I play on each? Which has a wider variety? Would people rather see being played a Guitar or a Bass? In my school Jazz Band, the kid who plays Electric Guitar gets a solo in almost every song, but the Bass player gets like no recognition, does that mean that Bass does not sound good alone? Or not as good as Electric Guitar? Thanks. =DDD

it does not really matter which you learn first becuase both types are basically played the same way. Its just a slight difference in the fingers. Pick the one you find the most interesting and thats the one you should chose. I am a music teacher and I always tell my students that the hardest insturmnet to play is the one you do not want to play. I have been a teacher for four years now. I would recomend you start with the electirc guitar first since you already have it. THe electric guitar gets the most attention in your jazz band becuase the sound it produces is almost always required of the electric guitar. Bass guitars are usually a blending sound with the rest of the band. Its not that its less important then the other insturments becuase what would the song sound like without it. You can play any type of music you would like on either insturment. Just remember practice pracitce practice and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy

I have learned a quote for a matter just like this. There are two types of guitar players - real guitar players, and bassists. Now, all fun and games set aside, it is true that bassists are hard to come by, but, at least where I am, drummers are even harder to come by if we are going by that game. Why not go to a guitar shop and play both and figure out for yourself which makes more sense to you?

Bass is easier than guitar. A lot of people want to be a guitar player because they think they'll be the "star" of the show. Good bass players are a little harder to come by because they are often people who are less interested in the limelight and more interested in being good musicians. Paul McCartney and Sting have done alright for themselves in spite of playing the bass. It's easier to be a good bass player than a good guitar player.

i think bass guitars are a lil underrated. the average 4 string bass guitars are easier to play... you can play any type of music.... i think that most people would prefer seeing a guitar being played. Hell a bass can sound great alone - check out les claypools solos. they're as good as each other.

i personally like electric guitar more .that might be because i play but once you master the chords you can pretty much play anything you want.bass guitar hurts your fingers more because of the bigger strings and you dont get the privlages that a guitar has such as a whammy bar ,extremely fast solos, the girls seem to be more interested in guitar players(i should know)etc...and no the bass doesnt sound good alone unless you're in metallica .guitar has the same variety of song as bass but on guitar it actually sounds like the song.

Well, I personally think that the bass is underrated. But, if you want to know both, and since you already have an electric guitar, you should learn the guitar first. I've heard that the transition to bass will be rather easy.

Go master playing the bass!! Go learn some funky slap bass songs. Go listen to a song called Power by Marcus Miller or Portrait of Tracy by Jaco Pastorius
