What are some good guitar sheet music books?

Music sheet to guitar, how do you do it?

  • I'd like to be able to play music sheets on guitar. Not tabs! But the sheets that are used for piano etc. I know that the notes played in the sheet are found on the notes from the guitar's fretboard. But how do you know which string it is played in or which octave it is played in like is it in the first 12 frets of the guitar or do I need to played it beyond the 12th fret? Can anyone explain to me (assuming I already memorized the music staff), how to translate a music sheet to a guitar's fretboard? Thanks a lot!

What Richard B said is true. Let me add a couple of things... In many cases, the music won't be written specifically for guitar. So, it won't tell you which string to play a note on - you have to figure that out for yourself. For instance, if you're looking a measure of 8-8th notes, and one of them is a high C (2 ledger lines above the staff), you shouldn't play a top line F on the first fret. You should play it on the 6th fret second string, because it's closer to the high C (8th fret, 1st string). So, my advice is to look ahead a few notes so you can decide what position you should play it in. To get really good at reading, pick up a method book such as The Berklee Method for Guitar (vols 1, 2, 3), by Bill Leavitt. Earlier this year, I wrote a short article on reading music. An open low E string is the E below the staff. The high E string is the E in the space at the top of the staff. All of the other open strings fall between. The open A string is below the staff, D string is just under the staff, G string is on the staff, and B string is on the staff. Once you have that as a foundation you can figure everything else out.
