How do you clean a trumpet?

How do I play "up a 4th" on a Bb trumpet?

  • I am trying to transpose a piece of music. The piece is written for Eb trumpet. The problem is, I play Bb trumpet. I really want to learn how to play this. I know that I have to play up a 4th, but I don't really know how to do that. Please help! By the way, the piece is "Concerto for Trumpet in Eb Major" by Haydn.

  • Answer:

    In practice, up a fourth means you are going up by 3.5 steps. Theory: Take a C major scale. The fourth note in the scale is F. So, Up a fourth from C is F. As a side note, since the 4th, 5th and octave are all considered "open," meaning there is no major or minor, these terms aren't preceeded by major or minor. If you were going up by a 3rd, for example, you would specify whether you were transposing by a major 3rd or minor 3rd. Practice: The first three notes of the Haydn concerto is C D E in Eb. In Bb, that would be F G A. Also, this is a standard piece that is widely transposed into C and Bb, so I'm positive you could find it online. (I have a 20 year old hardcopy from when I had to learn that piece...)

it's really simple! just take each note up 4 whole steps from the written note. for example: C (original note)--> F# Db --> G D --> G#/Ab Eb --> A E--> Bb F --> B F# --> C G --> C#/Db Ab/G# --> D A --> Eb Bb --> E B --> F C --> F# Hope this helps!!
