How do I take out a string and put in a new one on my acoustic guitar?
-
I'm a complete newbie to guitar, how do I take out one (that I kind of over-did the tuning on...) and put in a new one? Also, should I replace all of them if I have to do this one too? And which strings are better for newbies?

do the other strings have any discoloration? (indicates oxidation / older / less lifespan. No? then just pop the new one in. generally change as a set, tighten as a set. trash as a set. [six month periods] newbies tend to get better on nylon strings. less trauma till you've learned how to handle them. then heavy guage Earnie Ball Slinky's :-) then medium anything then light when your are safe and comfortable. then go back to what ya dig!

One way of doing this is to have the shop take care of it. You need only to replace the damaged string. I can't imagine what is wrong with the "over" done string. Unless it broke. Unwind, pull out and replace. Buy the same brand, since you can buy just one if you prefer. If you cannot, the shop will probably know which brand will work, or, they may want to replace all of them.

I always recomend changing all string at the same time. This is because it is easier to keep track of which strings are getting older and start sounding dull. As far what kind of string just stick with regular tension untill you know what kind of sound you are after
strings stretch over time. so unless it broke don't be too quick to replace. how they're changed depends on the type of guitar and usually if they are on for the same length of time then replace together. again, type of string depends on the guitar. there is gonna be a time frame where its probably gonna hurt. just hang in there. even if playing for yourself it can be a wonderful thing.

I've changed a lot of guitar strings. Last time I tried it I busted 3 whole sets on my acoustic. It turns out I had some bad technique. Here's what I did. Take it to a guitar shop that has someone experienced in acoustic guitars. Have them do a thorough change and basically take a lesson from them in how to do it successfully. Try to come away from there with at least 6 solid pointers. I had changed a lot of strings, but I hadn't been doing it well. The time and small amount of money will be a great investment in your skill. Best of luck, fellow guitarist! Stick with it, and it will be good to you. - kevin
