What colleges have the best programs to get a BFA in Musical Theatre?

  • I'm looking into colleges presently. I want to major in Musical Theatre, preferably with a BFA. Not just Drama or Dance or Voice, but specifically Musical Theatre. What colleges have good Musical Theatre Programs? And does anyone know about the quality of the UArts in Philadelphia Musical Theatre program?

    Two in my region are Oklahoma City University, and the University of Oklahoma. I understand that Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh has a nice program. It is not all that common a major, actually. Be careful of places that say they have a "Musical Theatre" major that is actually just a degree in music or theatre with some courses in the other. Musical theatre is a highly specialized art form, and requires special training.

One of the best places to get a BFA from is NYU's Tisch Schoolof the Arts. It's highly competitive and very hard to get into, and a degree from there comes with plenty of prestige. They have different institutes and conservatories that their students are placed into, and the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP 21) is the musical theater studio. Being right in NYC with all its theater opportunities is a huge plus of NYU. So many of today's biggest B'way stars attended Tisch, such as Idina Menzel from "Wicked," and went on to win Tony's for their work. Check out the Tisch website for more info.
