How to use guitar tuner?

  • I have kaps MT-10 tuner. I tuned A string A4=440. But when I play High E it shows 'D'. And low E it shows 'F'. How do i tune my guitar? This is what the tuner show E=D B=D# G=C D=F A=A E=F#

Please put the tuner away for a moment and use your ear to tune to some reference notes. Here's a link that will give you the correct notes: http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/onlinetuner.html I think your tuner has the capability to play reference notes too, but you have to know which octave to play.....for now, try using a known reference like a piano or the online tuner. When the guitar is as close as you can get by ear, use your tuner to check it and make minor adjustments. Tuners are very good at helping you tune to the nearest note. You managed to tune your E string to a D. The tuner is showing the string as perfectly in tune...to the wrong note. You probably need to raise the pitch of the high string until it displays E. (D-D#-E) The problem with trusting the tuner entirely is that you might tune a string to a higher or lower octave (the notes repeat on every 12th semi-tone which is called an octave) You could end up snapping a string. For instance, your low E is tuned to F#....that's either 2 frets high or 10 frets low. If you start tightening the string, you'll end up snapping it before you get to the next higher E note. Maybe that sounds confusing...don't worry about it. Just trust your ear and an outside reference note before using the tuner. Once the guitar is in tune, you can safely use the tuner every day because the strings shouldn't go far enough out of adjustment to throw the tuner off.

The standard tuning for a guitar is Standard E, which goes like this: High E - B, G, D, A, Low E The A in this tuning is one octave lower than A4 = 440Hz, which is A3 = 220 Hz. You will need to tune each string until it matches with the tuner. For your E string that the tuner indicates is playing a D, that means you'll need to tighten that string until it hits E. For your B string under that, I'm going to guess that it's the lower D#, since if it's the higher D#, your string would snap. Tighten that string until it hits B. You get the idea.
