How can i make Chords for this guitar tuning i made?
-
Well, im a huge Mark Tremonti fan and i know that he likes to play around with guitar tuning to make unique chord voicings and finger style tones and stuff. So i decided toy around with Open F# tuning (half step lower than Open G tuning) and i ended up making the tuning which is from Lowest to highest: B F# C# F# B E. I love it because i can do amazing fingerpicking stuff no matter what like 95% of the time But i don't really know how to make chords all that well. Ive been playing guitar for about a year and 10 months self tought and i know little theory but enough to know what key to use what notes are in them and how to make major and minor chords. It sounds like this tuning really shines when played in the key of A (in key of a ,notes are as followed: A B C# D E F# G# A) But when i try making major and minor chords out of them, they don't match the feel of what i play fingerstyled. So what should i do??

Answer:
It sounds like you're experiencing a common problem amongst guitarists where you're confusing the chord SHAPE with actual chord quality. If you use this chord shape: 3 2 0 0 0 3 with your tuning, YOU'RE NOT PLAYING G MAJOR! Sure, it's a SHAPE you've ASSOCIATED with G major, but the notes are completely different! When working with a new tuning, it can be helpful to work out various shapes for certain types of chords. It can also be interesting to figure out what sort of chords shapes you're already familiar with result in with this new tuning! If you don't know the notes on the neck in standard tuning, you probably shouldn't be playing around with alternate tunings right now. If you do know them, but you can't figure them out in your new tuning, then you need to work on that. Write them out on paper! Next, if you can't tell me what notes are in a C minor, F# major, or Bb diminished 7th chord, then you're going to have more trouble. Watch these videos I made on chord construction, they should help you out. Then, if you learn all the notes along the neck in your new tuning, you can get started figuring out some new chord shapes. http://www.tinyurl.com/lucasmanchords1 http://www.tinyurl.com/lucasmanchords2 http://a.1asphost.com/LukeSniper/ccc.html
