How to become a DJ?

How hard is it to become a dj?

  • I have some experience with dj'ing and i own some dj equipment. I was wondering how hard would it have be to become a commercial dj? I work at a banquet place and i get to look at their dj equipent every day. I'm familiar with all the equipment and i know how to dj. I was just wondering how hard it would be to start.

It's like anything else...It takes lots of hard work and a little luck! It's not what you know, it's who you know!

It's really quite easy. Just get a job as a janitor at a radio station, and your big break will come when one of the regular DJs calls in sick.

its pretty hard you really have to promote yourself and get yourself well known especially through high schools so itll be slow at first but then soon enough youll become well known and will be making alot of money

It's really no different than if you were in a full band. You need word-of-mouth, good media (website, ad, blog coverage, or similar), and a really great demo (in this case, it would probably be a video of you at work live, since DJs need charisma and personality, in addition to a good ear).

The Chuck Norris kind of hard.

Hard? What hard? Nothing's hard in this world. It's not even in my dictionary. I was a musician since young. Me and eldest brother didn't even go to music school. With God given born talent, we're just damn good in music, no matter what instruments. There was one time I was working as FOH sound-man at Sarawak World Rainforest festival. Then I met the Scottish group sound-man. They didn't even got time to practise. After finishing on the spot sound check and when the band start playing, My God, it sounded totally like from the CD. CRYSTAL CLARITY. I ask him how you knew what you were doing. He says, "PRACTISE BOY, YEARS OF PRACTISE MAKES ME PERFECT". I really salute that guy. Never start with the word HARD, that's very negative, look from the bright side. Since you're interested in DJ'ing, I sincerely belief you got talent. Mixed with more DJ', read more DJ's mags, Most of all dare to try. Get feedback on how you perform. Don't bother on people laugh at you. Why? The last laugh is the best. On EQ side, the best don't means the best. Our time we only use TECHNIC TURNTABLES and LPs. Now you have Cd's, Mp3, DVD, etc. Have you try Virtual DJ? This highly recommended. Remember, Practise make perfect. Believe in yourself. Never fear to try. Good luck.

Find some places that could use a professional DJ and the AUDITION for them... There is a reason they are called PERFORMING ARTS... and the audition is part of that. Good luck... I hope you are a better DJ than some of the losers I have seen.
