How should I sing for a Musical?

People who can` t sing would like to join a musical group. They can` t . How shall I tell them?

  • I am a leader of a Christian musical group and some people who really cannot sing , think that they can sing and they would `love` to join us. I would love that too but I cannot say `yes` to them because the music would be terrible then. Can you tell me please, what could I tell them, if I don` t want to hurt them?

  • Answer:

The truth hurts but is often the best way. Saying yes can creat a bigger and longer lasting bad situation. Try to find some kind words but practicle reasons such as it is unfair on the person wanting to join to ex[ect them to acheive the standard and hard for the others to maitain there own quality if there distractions form other singers.

You should be gentle but honest; tell them that you appreciate their offer to join but that they need more practice and that maybe they can join after a few years of training. Maybe you could suggest they take lessons from someone?

As the leader, you should do the Christian thing and allow them to sing. You're all there for the same reason, to praise God, not to be shining singers, leave reality singing comp television where it belongs. You're not Simon. You should love thy neighbor. It's great that they want to get involved with the church, welcome them with open arms. They may love being involved so much that they move to another task, rather than singing. If you deny them a choir position, then they may feel unloved, not welcome by the church, and will stop going. As a leader, their faith is in your hands, welcome them with open arms!

Try telling them they don't have quite the right 'kind' of voices for the kind of sound you are trying to achieve; tell them that you have quite a specific blend of voices which you are trying to achieve, and that the right balance of voices is essential. This way you're not quite lying, you're not being insulting or hurtful to anyone, and you won't be in an embarrassing situation when you want to allow someone else to join the group. It's never easy though;just be gentle- some people will realise the real reason, but appreciate the kinder approach, some people will just believe you and walk away. Almost nobody wil say "you think I'm rubbish, don't you?"

There's no easy answer to your question. Look at all the people who show up on American Idol, who think they can sing, and are told they stink, and they can't believe it. Sometimes you have to just be truthful. Another way, though, might be for them to sing solo, while you record it, then have them sit down with other people, and play it back for them to hear. Its quite a bit different to hear yourself sing, than when you're actually DOING the singing. If they can't hear how bad they are then, then it might require you to just , er, gently explain that maybe they could play an instrument, or learn to, rather than sing, in God's service. It's ok if a church member sings off-key in the seats, it's quite another thing for the choir to do so. Maybe using Amazing Grace "how sweet the sound" would be a good test. :D Humor in God's service is always welcome.

Just suggest that they go to a professional singing instructor to see if they can give them some advice about their abilities and to see if there is any chance for improvement. If a person has no talent at all then the instructor will tell them so. You don't have to hurt anybody's feelings then.

What a guy!!

The truth is that you don't have quite the sound I'm looking for in this band at the moment but I will keep you in mind if we need someone for a backup to replace the ( whatever octive they sing in) or to cover the range of area in your expertise. Thank you.
