other than lessons, learn to build up confidence, youre trying out for a play you say? I know this may sound funky but when you sing, you "yawn" the back of your throat so you sound full and husky, not squeaky. yawn right now and you will feel that empty space in the back of your throat. and remember remember to sing vertically, not horizontally. You wouldnt talk sloppily would you? this goes especially for singing, be clear in your pernounciation, and push with your diaphram and stomach muscles, when you sing you should feel your stomach push out. buy or rent musicals and pay attention to how the actors talk and sing. They can be heard because they have good stage voice. Figure out why they sound so clear, is it because they have good pernounciation? are they singing from their stomachs and not their throats? (hard to explain) and confidence attracts alot of people :) good luck honey.

The best thing i can say is take voice lessons. That way a professional can hear what you are doing correctly and incorrectly. A big thing i can tell you to keep in mind is breath support. So many people now days don't have the breath support they should to sustain notes and making notes sound powerful instead of airy. Also work on ear training, aka interval detection.

If you can't afford lessons, buy a guitar tuner and practice with that. The best thing is lessons, for sure.

lessons always help. summer is coming up, try a local youth acting company and you can learn acting as well as singing. or just listen closely to songs, and then try to match the same notes. the better you get, choose harder songs. i dont know if it works for other people but i have been singing forever and when i have a hard song to sing i always sing in my car to regular songs but one octave up or down to make it harder. it also helps if you can read music.

First, don't aim so high you disappoint yourself. You're only deflating your confidence. Don't go out there expecting to be a 'shockingly good singer' if you admit that you have some vocal problems now. That said I am willing to bet you're not half as bad as you think you are. It sounds more like you have a problem with self-esteem/confidence than with your vocals. Though they are probably weak if you've not had any sort of vocal training: be it choir, lessons, etc. Getting a better singing voice comes from practice. Accomplished singers practice every day, but by no means do they sing until they are hoarse. You don't want to do marathon training sessions or try to sing outside your comfort zone until you have the 'basics' under control. You need to learn how to properly support your breath, how to enuciate your words so that they are clear, how to hold your mouth to get the desired vocalizations. I would strongly suggest joining a choir (school, church, community) as this is a great place to start learning the fundementals. Another suggestion would be to take lessons. If you can't afford them talk to your choir director (at school, church, whereever) and see if they would be willing to give you a hand. Or maybe you have a musically inclined friend (one that knows what they are doing!) who would be willing to help you out. And a tip on being 'the lead'. Most of the time 'the lead' goes to an established person in the troupe. You normally have to 'pay your dues' as a minor character before you get the honor of 'lead'. If this is a first audition then don't be disappointed if you don't get your desired part. Just take whatever they give you gratefully, show them how seriously you take your assignment and try out again next year.

Well don't aim for the lead if you don't think you're very good. My suggestions would be to get a voice instructer to work on your tone and technique, avoid soda and milk before you sing, drink lots of water and juice, and do NOT smoke. That's really all you can do that I know of. Good luck!
