How easy is it to damage your vocal chords?

Did I damage my vocal chords?

  • I am a stage singer and an opera singer. I hear I'm quite decent at it. Suddenly I find it difficult to project and every time I try to hit the high notes I could hit before- I sharp (my voice cracks). -_o I don't know what's wrong. It started a bit after I did constant recordings of "Let the Record Show" By Emilie Autumn and "Taking Over Me" by Evanescence. I think I just stressed my vocal chords but I'm not sure. I can hit higher notes- but I can't change from a low note to a high note quickly like I use to. And I can't sing as loud without y voice cracking.

    It seems obvious that you have harmed your vocal chords, but how badly, only a visit to ear-nose-throat specialist will tell you that! Next time, please be wiser and do not do those silly things or you will eventually jeopardise your voice for good! Think about vocal nodules and whatnot.

Get your throat checked out by an ENT, by all means. But I wonder if how much vocal training you've had to begin with. Sometimes naturally talented singers can really sound beautiful even when they are singing in a way that will eventually damage their voices. You also don't state your age. Girls voices go through changes throughout adolescence, though not as much as boys'. Female voices don't even mature fully until the late twenties, and even hormonal changes can cause problems if the singer doesn't know the techniques to compensate. If you find that your throat problems are curable, make sure you get the best vocal teacher you can find (don't rely on do-it-yourself courses or online courses--find a real person with actual vocal music credentials such as a degree from an university or conservatory).
