How To Play Bass Guitar?

How hard is it to play bass guitar?

  • I have never played any musical instruments and am more of and athelete. but i have recently quit a few sports and want to play bass guitar. I have always had a passion for music in the genre of punk alternative metal and modern rock. drums cost too much, it seems everyone plays guitar and i cant sing(haha) so all thats left is bass which is cool. does anyone know how hard it is or how long it takes to become an intermediate bass player( i will most likely play with a pick maybe fingers no slap)

  • Answer:

Bass is slightly easier than guitar as far as fingering because you don't have to worry about chords and barres and lead guitar has a lot of weird fancy techniques like bending to worry about. Also, most bass for punk and alternative songs is pretty basic. Of course, though, slap bass I've never attempted and that's a whole other skill. Also you might need more physical strength for bass than guitar because the strings are so thick and the frets are a little farther apart. So I guess one isn't harder than the other, but I think it's easier to become mediocre at bass than mediocre at guitar, if you know what I mean. Of course there are AMAZING bassists with tons of crazy skill though, so I don't mean any disrespect there. If you practice you could probably become comfortable on the instrument in about a year, which is how long it usually takes guitarists to be considered past the beginning level. But you do need to practice.

bass is physically harder to play then guitar due to the larger strings and longer neck but since you only play one note at a time than it is mentally a bit easier then guitar. If you start with lessons you can be at an intermediate level in about a year or less. Without lessons maybe 2 years or more. I teach both guitar and bass and I strongly suggest you take lessons with a good qualified local teacher. %90 of people who try to teach themselves end up quitting after a short time due to frustration and lack of direction.

Honestly anyone can play bass its really easy. Now that DOESN'T mean your a great bassist. I see most bassists and just think about how pathetic they're parts are (i see that way too much in punk). Finger style and picking also produce two differnt types of sounds so it shouldn't really be about whats easier but how you want it too sound. As the other ************ mentioned it shouldn't take more then a year or two too become an intermediate player but most people usually are not that much better then that. TAKE NOTE!! If you truly do not like the bass guitar you WILL NOT like playing the bass.
