Why don't more people go to concerts?
-
I live for music and love the adrenaline rush I get from going to see my favorite band live. It baffles me when I meet people who have never been to a concert in their whole lives. It also baffles me when people act like music and art are not that important. Also I live in Richmond, Virginia and the local music scene here sucks -- people hate going out and they don't like to support local music. QUESTION: Why don't are people want to go to concerts (FYI, don't say price because their are many free shows, and shows that cost less than $10) ? QUESTION 2: Why do some music scene's thrive while others suck? QUESTION 3: How can I make my local music scene better? What are some motivators to get people to go out and support local music?

Answer:
1 Not everyone has the same love for music as we do. #2 Music "scenes" depend on several factors. Not the least of which is local economy. If people are out of work, and or struggling then music is a luxury that cannot be indulges in. Even going to a "free" show is not free. There are considerations such as gas, food, parking, etc. that often make it hard for people on a budget. There are also other factors such as weather the local business community sees entertainment as important or a not. Many cities make it very difficult to open a venue for live music performance. There are many aspects of zoning, insurance, public nuisance, etc. that can make it very difficult for the local music entrepreneur to open a facility for this. #3 There are several way you can help. Just by showing up for shows is a good start. Develop a blog or a website dedicated to showcasing local talent and advertising local shows. Befriend local bands and help them garner attention. Approach local facilities about doing more shows or "open mic events" to give new talent wider exposure. It is part of the responsibility of the local music community to support live music. I applaud your efforts and wish you luck!!

For question 1, it's most likely because people don't find it necessary to go to concerts when they can just youtube them and watch it there. I know a whole LOT of people that do this because they want to save money and are too lazy to go. Question 2: Maybe the band isnt that popular and the songs don't reach out to many people. Question 3: Try going to facebook (if you have one) and putting up the concert events and inviting people to go with you. Or, try putting up posters around the neighborhood telling about the concerts.
