How can I get better at singing without voice lessons?

Lessons with singing?

  • With singing lessons, does your voice get better? Im wondering cuz my friend keeps telliut i sing me i can't sing now but i have the potential to become a great singer. So she suggested singing lessons. Does it make you voice better?

  • Answer:

If you practice, yes, lessons do help your voice get better. The reason you need a teacher (and yes, you need someone who is qualified to give you lessons) is that you need someone to guide you in the right direction. What "sounds good" to your ear may not actually be the best sound your voice can make. You need to sing by "feeling" and you need someone to let you know when you are doing things correctly, at least at first. I could go on forever - but essentially studying with a teacher will also help you develop good singing habits that won't damage your voice in the long run. Even people who aren't very good at matching pitch can learn - with hard work - to match pitch. (I am assuming you don't have this problem). If this is something you want to continue doing - get yourself a teacher. Yes, if they are qualified, it isn't going to be cheap. But, you will be getting worthwhile training that can improve your singing and keep you singing well for many years. Look around and see if you can find a vocal teacher at a local college who is willing to take you on - often they do take on private students in addition to their college students. You want someone who has some degrees in vocal performance or vocal pedagogy. You can go to www.nats.com and search for teachers in your area. (National Association of Teachers of Singing website) To be a member, they have to have a degree, be referred by a long-standing member, and to have had teaching experience. So, in a nutshell, yes, it will make your voice better, but you have to work hard at it and sing daily, practicing the things that you work on with your teacher. Good luck to you!

I sing, and it's more the practice with singing that improves your skill, not lessons. Most teachers overcharge and underqualified. However, if you can't keep a tune, there is no way to "become a great singer". Also, if you have an annoying or really nasal voice, technique could correct this but becoming a good singer mostly depends on innate talent.

little secrets †

Saying that lessons don't help is completely absurd. I'm semi-professional musician, and without lessons it's practically impossible to learn proper singing methods and other important things like how to read music. An important thing is that you're teacher doesn't start you singing improperly when you are too young. There are many bad vocal teachers out there so it is good to be careful, and I agree that it would be a good idea to look at a local college for a teacher. You want to sing with a mostly very relaxed, light and airy voice until you're probably at least 16/17 years old or so. DON'T take lessons from someone who is pushing you to sing showtunes, opera, or always loudly. And definately MAKE SURE that your voice is not hurting after you sing- it's a sign that you could be damaging it.
