What is a reasonable rate for Piano lessons?

What is the point of taking piano lessons?

  • I have been taking them for a little over 10 years now...and I really don't want to do anything in piano carreer-wise. I am now a junior and I want to major in zoology. So I am aiming to do something completely different than piano. I just want to know, what is the point of taking lessons? My mom still wants me to take lessons, but what could I even do with lessons? Sure, I'll be good at piano, but what will that get me in life? I would rather quit and play songs that I want to play. Of course I like to play piano, it's just that my teacher enters me in contests, and I would rather devote my time to my studies in school than in piano. Could someone give me some valid advice on what I should do? My mom still wants me to take lessons but I'm bored with it and would rather work harder and school. Thanks so much.

I was in the same situation a couple years ago. No matter what you do, do not quit, or you'll regret it. Your life is obviously busy now, and you feel overworked with piano and school at the same time. But it would make it better if you didn't have to do contests, right? Explain to your teacher that you don't want to enter contests anymore. I doubt she has the right if you refuse. If that doesn't work, ask your mom about switching piano teachers. Once you get at a certain point in piano, you won't really need a teacher anymore. Just practice a little, you'll be sorry if you forget everything. Having a talent is a valuable thing in life, so please do not quit the actual piano.

Perhaps you could take a break from lessons with the understanding that you could resume lessons if you want to. Sometimes a break from something will cause a renewed interest after a period of time and you will re-approach it with a different perspective. Even if you don't resume lessons, the ability to play will always be with you and it will be an asset when you become a parent because you will be able to introduce music to your children in a way that you would not have been able to if you had not studied music yourself. For the rest of your life, you will listen to music differently from the non-players and you will enjoy it more because you will hear things that the non-players can't..

You could work part-time as a piano teacher in the future, but you can also tell your mother about what you want to major in. Tell her that you do not want to learn piano as you think that it would not help you in the future. :) basically, learning piano helps you to relax and if you want to major in music, it is a good start. but since you do not want to major in music, then it is better for you to stop and concentrate on your goals instead. good luck! :D

It's good to see you are focused on your studies. If you feel that strongly about the piano but your mother is still going to make you continue with the lessons, then maybe you can earn a scholarship with the piano and use it to study Zoology. Later in life you may have more of an appreciation for the piano. Good luck!

Explain to your mom exactly what you just wrote. You have completely valid points, after 10 years of piano I can see why you'd want to focus on studies, especially since you don't want to pursue it in your career. I'm sure you're already very good and probably don't even need the lessons anymore. Tell your mom that you will still play piano, but you'll enjoy it more if you're not being forced to do so.

Alee

The point is you want to play it. Just tell your mom you want to go in a different direction. Go for bigger and better, and smarter. She needs to know you don't like it, and that it's your life, not hers.

i play the guitar for 10 years . i just like it cz with my friends we have fun,we sing. if u really dont like to play the piano just stop..u can pay for something u really like. just enjoy the music.

non-serviam

just tell your mum that you dont want to do it anymore and if you have been doing it for 10 years, i think you would have learnt like everything, its a good talent to have but if you dont like it then give it up

Dude, you're a junior. You should be old enough to make your own decisions. Pursue in whatever you love. Piano is nice, but if it's not your thing, then screw it.

Sister Kill

I was half forced to play piano too...but then i personally force myself to do it because i thought it was good for college..but that's not true since i'm not that good. eventually i stop and looking back..i just think it was a waste of time!!! 30 mins every week :S 50 dollars per time... uggh. i should have stopped after i know how to play quite okish..after that i agree with you..just drop out and play whatever song you want. it is pointless. just as long as you know the some basics then its more than enough .
