I have to choreograph a routine using sabres for my Color Guard team. Does anyone know and moves I can use?
-
I'm the captian of my Guard and we just got sabres this year. I know a few moves, but not very many....I was wondering if anyone knew some moves that they'd be able to explain to me or knew of anywhere I can watch some video of sabre moves. If you're able to explain, you can describe how you'd do it with a flag if it's easier, since I spin flag as well.

Wow, this might just be my favorite question EVER!!!! OK, for starters, you can find video of some groups on youtube.com, but the best clips will be on wgi.org under "multimedia" at the side. Not all the clips feature saber, but if you can watch Pride of Cincinatti '05 you'll get some great ideas. I was also captain my senior year, and my strongest skills are probably on saber (well, yeah, flag too...but I love my saber to pieces). My favorite moves involve tossing it in different ways - from the blade, from the hilt (though not a true hilt toss), parallels. Under the leg stuff is fun too - like tossing it from under the leg to above it or even just rotating it there from the hilt. Around-the-body stuff is pretty cool - a little more difficult, but once you get it it looks cool; like when you rotate a flag around your waist. It's kind of hard to get on saber because you don't have the length, but I usually catch it in my leg on either side. Combining saber with dance always looks really good too. Hope this helps!

I used to be in color guard YEARS ago, it was a lot of fun. However, we never used sabres. I would like to say that whatever you do, it needs to be in unison...or no matter how nifty those moves are, they'll look all hodge-podgy if eveyone is not exactly on cue. Implimenting new tools can be tricky, so just make sure everyone is in sync.

That's cool. Try looking at some martial art style sword demos. You can go to Google Video and seach "kung fu sword" and many different clips come up. Here's a few.... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1282558053678185367&q=kung+fu+sword http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3758254931764115705&q=kung+fu+sword http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-343570751140372633&q=kung+fu+sword I think you might be able to find some really cool moves from these clips. Hope that helps!
