Answer:
Shop around, Play as many different guitars as you can find in your price range. One will probably stand out for comfort, playability and tone. Get that one. If there is a guitar center near you that is a great place to start, but most music shops will let you play their instruments. Used guitars will give you more bang for your buck, but buy one you can play first, from a reputable dealer if possible, it can be risky getting a guitar off Ebay. I have bought guitars at pawn shops and have always gotten really good deals. In my experience, for lower end guitars, humbuckers are easier to get a good tone from, but there are exceptions, I have an old Squier Tele that has great tone. Here is a good place to look for some brands and styles you might like, and give you an idea of what you can find in your price range. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/solid-body-electric-guitars?N=100001+306241+8&Ns=P_Score%7c1&rpp=60

It depends on what kind of music you want to play. Most alternative rock bands use fenders. If you want to play Gun's N Roses, Metallica, Black Sabbath, and some other Metal or Classic rock bands, you should get a guitar with humbuckers. Stevie Ray Vaugan, Nirvana, Eric Clapton, The White Stripes, and others. Get a single coil guitar. I recommend you get an epiphone(not special, junior, SG310, or LP100) or a Fender. I SUGGEST YOU HAVE A BETTER AMP BEFORE A BETTER GUITAR. Amps are more important IMO. Also, grab yourself a multi-effects pedal. This is a guitar that I am about to get. It is very nice for the price. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Limited-Edition-1966-G-400-Electric-Guitar-102676350-i1166714.gc

Get a used or new Fender Stratocaster with a humbucker pickup at the bridge or by a regular one and install a humbucker. Humbuckers sound better then single coils and some kinds you can modified to get that perfect sound. I have a Lyon by Washburn (I know it sucks) and I put a B.C.Rich Humbucker in it (I'm more into the hard rock but i still play alternative) and it sounds a lot better. You should check us out on myspace. www.myspace.com/dropp3dd . We have a crappy recording of a demo that sounds a lot better than that now, and we still have to re record. But check it out, and hopefully will have a few more songs and a better recording in a couple months. Im lead guitar and vocalist, and i myself am fixing up an old Warlock from B.C.Rich. It is going to be a Navy blue color with (hopefully) EMG Pickups for the heavy rock songs.

A Les Paul guitar type would be more versatile because or the 2 humbucker pickups. Humbuckers tend to handle distortion better and since you are into alternative Rock that might be a better choice for now. You could also get the Fender Stratocaster Mex Standard HSS which has a humbucker and 2 single coils. That would give you some possibilities to experiment.

You are going to hate me for this, but you really don't need annother guitar after 2 months. Sorry, bud. There are about 12 guitars that I might could afford that I really like, but the truth is, all you really need is a good guitar and a backup. Although, here are some ideas as to what you might like as far as sound goes. The amp will shape your sound more than the guitar will, so focus on something that looks or feels good. Go to a local music store and just play around until you find something you like. Then go home and find something to compare it to online. Get familiar with as many different models as you can, and see if you can't find your dream guitar in your price range. For Alt rock, get something with humbuckers. Not EMG's or something like that, just humbuckers. Like this.http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-LP-Junior-Special-Electric-Guitar-101691038-i1150104.gc http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-RG120-Electric-Guitar-103576583-i1167511.gc That will do you fine for a long time. If you got the first one, get a local music store to put these pickup in it. It will greatly help your sound. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-P94T-Humbucker-Sized-P90-Bridge-Pickup-306913-i1128107.gc Ian Eflin Oh, to the guy who said G-310 SG's aren't good, I beg to differ. I've played for years and my 310 is still my main stage guitar. Not great for Alt rock, but it is an awesome, awesome guitar. I wish I had a P-94 and an EMG H4 in it, though. Oh, well. Oh, one more thing. Humbuckers are great, but a P-90 or P-94 is exactly what you need. They are like a humbucker and a single coil put togather. A couple more things. To the guy who said to get something with single coils so get and SG, WTF are you thinking?!! SG's have humbuckers, genius. Everyone who said Fender has it, though. Strats would be the best thing, but you'd have to change out the bridge and neck pickups for Single-coil sized Humbuckers, so it really isn't cost effective unless you can afford to blow $600.

It depends what kind of music your into. Most of your sound comes from your amp. I would recommend getting a nice amplifier. If your into metal and all kinds of hard rock get a guitar that you really like. For example if your into metal get a Dean or a ESP. If you want that classic rock sound get a Les Paul or SG. Gibsons can be expensive. There are Epiphone replicas, part of the Gibson family. They are cheaper than a true Gibson. Hope Ive helped.

when i started out, my second guitar was the ibanez gx70. it's a great guitar and usually costs around $200. it's not the best, but it's definitely not the worst either. i still use it more than any of my other guitars. also get yourself an amp. i play alternative and some hard rock and this baby works just fine for me.

For a moderately priced guitar you can't go wrong with an Epiphone or Mexican Fender. I really like the Mexican Fenders myself, but everyone will have their own opinions.

Probably just get an Epiphone. Look on Ebay, and just get whatever catches your eye. Humbuckers are better for metal/hard rock, and single coils are better for jangly clean, soft rock, country etc.
You want single coil pickups for alternative. I would recommend an Epiphone SG.
