How do you get on broadway?

How to get on broadway?

  • My dream is to be one broadway. I take voice lessons and have a dancing background. Is there any college or place that is best or musical theatre? And what should i do to get on broadway when I get older?

  • Answer:

Hi! The key is to really, REALLY get a leg up on the competition. There is A LOT of competition especially for something like a broadway show. Everyone has to be able to sing, dance and act to an incredible standard to even be called back and then needs to go through round after round of cuts to eventually get the job and when you have the job, you have it for a year and then it starts all over again. The best way to do this is to get yourself to a very good standard, VERY good, and then audition for a professional academy. I don't know where you live but some of the greats are places like Tisch and Julliard and Carnegie Mellon in the states, however as I live in London I really am only in touch and know about the London academies such as Arts Educational, Laine Theatre Arts, The Urdang academy, London Studio Centre, Mountview and Guildford School of Acting to name a few. As for what to do when you are older to get into broadway, that shouldn't be your current concern for two reasons: 1. If you are lucky enough to be accepted into a professional training programme they will teach you have to audition and get an agent and 2. Broadway shouldn't be your only goal. Only 2% of all actors ever find consistant work and I can bet there are only a handful who are talented enough to go from broadway show to broadway show so you really need to broaden your horizons. If you want to persue musical theatre, you need to KNOW abut musical theatre. Watch as many shows as you can. Yes Wicked and Lion king are great shows but they are only two. Learn about older musicals, learn about how musical theatre grew, learn all about it so you can show you really do know your stuff. The amount of people who audition for professional Musical Theatre training who know only a handful of shows are many and they never make it in. Also, just a quick overview for belt in musical theatre. If you are going to audition for professional colleges who will teach you correct vocal technique, DO NOT BELT. Belt is one colour and it is a very specific sound and the majority of people do not know what belt is ad give it a generalized definition and cannot belt healthily. So unless you are one of the 1% of the population whos laryngeal muscles are all ready well aligned for belting 8 shows a week, then steer well away as these will be detrimental to your voice and also to your chances of making it into a training academy. I really hope you realize your dream because there really is no better feeling than being on a stage. But you deserve to know the truth and this is just an answer to get you going in the right direction with the right mindset. What you have chosen to do as your career is not easy, never will be but if you want it, you can get it. It just takes a lot of hard work. The very best of luck to you! X
