What is "jazz" song?

What are some jazz song's that i can listen to to learn some scat techniques and vowels.?

  • my knowledge of jazz is very small because this is my 2nd singing in my high school jazz ensemble, and i mostly sing classical pop and rock, but i find jazz very rich in its own rights and i would like to better my scatting skills because they are rather weak sauce. I know about upper and lower neighbors and stuff... but i think listening to some professional scats would help me alot. i jazz media knowledge is very low and if you all could help me out i would be very thankful. thanks!

  • Answer:

It's not the songs so much, it's the people. Listen to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong for starters. Also Sarah Vaughan and John Coltrane. The link below mentions some specific songs and other artists. You can learn about others by doing an internet search for "Scat singing"; but Wikipedia gives a good intro.

Listen to the best, the queen of scat- Ella Fitzgerald- go out and buy a DVD of hers. Jane Monheit is an up and coming singer who is just amazing, she has great technique and also does some scat. Get an album of hers, too. Good luck

Scat has moved on since jazz had its hey-day between the 40s and 60s. If you really want to push the genre, I'd check out Human Beatbox. You can look at the vocal percussion as as extension of Hip Hop (the fourth element) but as the great producers often borrow from the jazz masters, syncopated mouth music properly crosses both genres. Check http://www.humanbeatbox.com/ History of the box - http://www.humanbeatbox.com/The_History_of_Beatboxing/p2_articleid/27 Master boxers - Kenny Muhammed, Rhazel, Killa Kela Louis Armstrong was a mean scat cat. Fela Kuti indulged a little too. It's better with backing vocals! Personally, I love the African approach - everything is a potential instrument, especially the mouth, nose and throat. I borrowed a fantastic album/dvd from the library the other day entitled "congotronics" glorious uses of rusty metal and plenty of vocal expression (though not being fluent in French or any African language it's hard to tell what if anything could be classfied as scat!) bedebobbob bab tsch

Listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme. The important thing about scatting is to let yourself go. Be free and willing to experiment.
