Hiya Shadow, I've won a few of these, and my advice would be firstly, to choose the right song for your voice, of course, but also the right song for that competition, so here's what to ask yourself...How many songs do you get to sing? who's at the competition? how many judges, what age are they? Will there be an audience? Who else is competing ie do you know any of them, then look at what you've got... Firstly, if there is an audience. Where is it going to be? in a club? in a hall? what sort of people are gonna be there? parents of all the other contesetants, Friends of all the other contestants...general public what??? You've got to get as many people you know in there, as many friends and family you can and your first song should be a song thats gonna wake them up slap them in the face and say HEY!!!!!!! LOOK AT MEEEE!!!! with your biggest grin you are gonna strut your stuff (make sure it's an uptempo song) like you own the stage or space that you are working in, confidence is just gonna ooze out of you ( and believe me...people with the 'x factor' have forced themselves to be like this..it's all about how much you want it!) climb on a table, jump on a chair, get them clapping along, singing along...whatever, just get them all looking at you, make sure you are the main focus and don't just pick any uptempo song, pick a song that works, pick a song that's been number one, pick a song that gets everyone going! (look at the age group of the judges and audience)but make it original, ie not the same song someone else is going to sing after you (what a nightmare!) Even if your voice was awfull (and I'm sure it isn't) that song is gonna get you by! put it this way If a girl comes on before you and sings a beautifull version of 'my heart will go on' ok it could be technically brilliant, but, it's overdone, people sing it all the time, it's boring, she'll still get a clap, maybe even a 'woo!' but she ain't gonna get a rooooaaaaaaaaaar!!!!!! do you understand what I'm saying?? You need to give it some Energy, your energy will fill that room, get the audience on your side, and have them willing you to win, the judges won't ignore that, Even if they wanted to because they will also be high on the atmosphere you have just created, they'll have to put you through to the next round! Then perhaps you'll actually get through on pure musical and vocal talent, pick a song that means something to you, something you can put real emotion into, let them see you mean what you are singing, don't fake it, Think about every single word you sing let yourself go, if you take this approach, sing something powerfull, not just mindless drivel from the charts, but a classic! It doesn't have to be high or low or even technically difficult, the simplist songs can really move people, sing something accapella, if you can, the room will go silent, ...watch and learn from the other performers...what is it they do that works or doesn't work...do people like them, do the audience warm to them (so inportant)??? do they look like they are enjoying themselves??? (again very important) or are they being ignored?? the more you go to the more you will learn! Practise your song till you know it inside out, and i mean practise, you'd be surprised how much it shows...and how many people don't put the time in to practise, it will give you a massive head start if you feel like you have been singing that song for years, you won't be worrying about the next line either!!!! BEST OF LUCK....knock em dead!!!

The biggest issue in singing competitions is to chose the right song to compete with. Know your voice, and do what works for you. If you watch the first few days of "American Idol" each season the people who are awful aren't necessarily bad singers; they are the people who chose songs that are completely inappropriate for their voices. It's always better to sing a simple song that you can sing really well than to chose something complicated that will make you fall flat on your face. As a voice teacher and competition judge, I can tell you that the biggest mistake people make is to chose songs that are too hard or of an inappropriate range. Also, never underestimate the importance of smiling and having a great stage presence.

Find your skill level and choose something slightly more difficult. If you can sing it well, you might stand out from the others.
