How To Play Guitar?

I want to learn how to play guitar, how long would it take to get fairly skilled?

  • i really want to learn how to play guitar, i want to be able to write my own songs and music and be able to play by ear. i know not everyone can play by ear but i want to at least be able to play my favorite songs. i love music, i'm fairly patient, and i have motivation to learn. how long would it take me to start playing, and how should i go about my guitar journey? i don't want to potentially get ripped off at a local guitar shop, what would you recommend i start with? i'm interested in learning acoustic guitar, maybe going on to electric later. how much should a sturdy acoustic guitar with a good sound cost, and should i take lessons ($$?) is guitar hard and/or confusing? thanks.

  • Answer:

Id say it takes around 6+ months to get fairly good. Id take a class if I were you.

About 80,000 HOURS of practice and performance is what most of the experts and seasoned professional musicians agree on as being what it takes to become really GOOD on the guitar.

A rule of thumb is that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master an instrument. So it all depends on how frequently and long you practice.

lessons? no. guitar? fender acoustic is good. is it hard? no. how long? not long. you should have someone teach you if you know someone. or just go to youtube and learn from other people. it really is not hard. you just got to learn to tune a guitar and have a good ear for music.

If you want to be fairly skilled, you don't need lessons. You can learn by yourself ... its definitely possible. Start by buying a great guitar instruction DVD or some videos (better than books IMO).. here's an online course I used to learn guitar when I was starting out and it was perfect for me! http://learntoplayguitarlessons.com Hope this helps!

You best bet would be to get guitar lessons online. They are much more inexpensive and the lessons can be repeated and gone over as many times as you like. You also have the ability to learn as fast, or as slow, as you like. When i began learning guitar, I was cheap and didn't want to pay for lessons. I formed lots of bad habits that I am still trying to unlearn. Your best bet for lessons would be http://www.rockguitarlessons.info They will lead you to, what I feel, is the best deal on the internet. A year's worth of lessons for a really cheap price. And you learn from professional guitar players. Check it out, and good luck!
