How do I get out of doing guitar lessons?

What can I get from guitar lessons in person I can't get from lessons online?

  • Trying to decide whether to take guitar lessons in class or online and save money. I'm a beginner and my friend is kinda intermediate... he thinks(LOL). We want to get the best instruction, quick!

I think that a combination of both would be a very good way to start. You can take one private lesson to learn the correct posture and left hand positions, and then switch to online lessons to save a significant amount of money and time. If you have a bit of self-discipline, you can actually get more from online lessons. You can then go on with online lessons and have some private tuition say once a month or every two months to sharpen the edges and clarify anything you don't fully understand. Let's make a small calculation and try to figure out some points: Normally, you would take one lesson a week if you want to see any kind of result in say 6-12 months. Let's assume that one hour of guitar lessons costs $40 (which can actually be higher). So, it would make $160 a month and $960 for six months. This is actually an awful lot of money to spend. Instead of this, you can go on with online resources - and there are some very decent resources that can provide value with a very small investment in terms of money- and have one lesson a month which sums up to only $240 in 6 months. You can find below an article I've found that can help you get in the right direction. Hope this helps you a bit.

Taking guitar lessons offline or online have both their pros and cons. It really depends on what kind of students you are. There are persons who do good if they study by themselves and there are those who learn faster if they deal with actual coaches. But my personal recommendation is to get the most out of both. It will be good if you learn and read beginner lessons available online, start feeling your guitar as you learn, it's actually surprising how some online resources are very detailed that you already learn how to play the basics without knowing it. At that moment, you can choose to find a coach and your lessons will be easier, easier for the coach to teach you, and easier for you to learn because you are not new with the lessons already.

the best instruction would be to find an instructor :p try craigslist, you would be surprised how many people advertise their services. I found my piano teacher that way. you get first hand experience and knowledge, someone to show you what you are doing wrong and to keep you on track. to keep you on the ball and pushing you forward. edit: what the hell is it with craigs list that people always give me thumbs down?? it worked for me. jeez.

It depends on your personality and style of learning. Some people learn well from videos and books or just have a natural inclination to play the guitar with the proper technique. Some people might remember things quickly and accurately. These types of people may not benefit as much from classes or lessons. A teacher can help guide a student toward material that is a suitable challenge for them. He or she can correct technical problems when necessary. A teacher can also quickly answer your questions. I think it would be very difficult to have a good understanding of music theory (Jazz or Classical) without an instructor or without discussing the topic with knowledgeable people. I learned to play guitar with the guidance of a teacher, and I learned alto saxophone without. It probably took me twice as long to learn the saxophone than it would have if I had an instructor. The benefit for learning without a teacher was that I saved thousands of dollars $$$. If you are looking to sign up for lessons in a classroom environment, and it costs nothing, then it might be worth it. It is hard for a teacher to guide a large class of music students, but there is plenty to gain in that environment. If you are looking to take private lessons, keep in mind that it can be difficult to find a teacher who will take you in the direction that you want to go. It's not a bad idea to try a few teachers out and then make a decision based on your experiences.
