What should I expect in a high school audition?

What to expect at a college music audition?

  • I'm a high school senior; my primary instrument is flute, secondary is tuba. I took theory two years ago, and could probably brush up on it to be able to take a test. I also have two solo's prepared, know my major and minor scales, and can sightread pretty decently. In terms of dress, format, routine, testing, etc...what am I to expect when I go to my first college audition? I'm pretty nervous, and just want to know what will come my way in order to tackle it. Any help would be appreciated, especially to fellow instrumental music auditioners. :)

  • Answer:

Depending on what school you're auditioning for, you should at LEAST expect to play 2 major scales from memory, 2 excepts from music that should be provided on the school's band website, and a short sight-reading excerpt. Now that's for ensemble/chair auditions. For scholarship auditions, you usually just play a solo without the accompinament until they tell you they've heard enough. It's really not that bad. Try not to show your nerves. Smile and converse with the professors and dress in all black or just nice clothes. You seem very well prepared so you shouldn't have any problems. Although you've taken Theory, most schools will make you take it again even if you have AP credit.
