How do I start an acting career?

How do I start an acting career when I'm still in High School?

  • I'm a seventeen year old high school student and I am extremely interested in becoming an actress. I took an Acting Workshop class at my school two years ago and I got a 90% A and the teacher said I have "Stage Precense". I've been interested in Acting as a career since I was five or six years old. So, my question is this: What should I do to pursue a career in acting? I live on Long Island (close to NYC). Should I print up a resume now and take headshots after February (when I get my braces off) and then go on auditions over the summer? My aunt says I should go to college, which I want to, but I want to make sure I've exhausted every effort to become an actress first. So should I take a year off to pursue acting and then go to college?

  • Answer:

You should go to college, but there are performing arts schools. Or while your in college, check out if there are any local productions or the theatre club. There is a way to get your education and be an actress and I'm sure many of the performing arts schools will give you the foundation to get your career off the ground.

Go to college. I was an acting major in college I learned a lot about acting and myself when I was there. Go to school with a strong arts program get involved as much as you can. The school will help you develop your talent and at the same time provide a place for you to practice your craft. You can always audition to do summer stock work which I think is a great option look for auditions..normally at large state universities but open to other age groups. Also try to get involved in community theater scene the more people you know the more connections you make the more connection more exposure and more chances at making your big break.

The last I heard, they have acting classes in college. Get as much training as possible but also that education. That's so very important. You may be "pounding" the streets for awhile so you need your education to help tide you over. Think ahead and look at both sides of the "coin". One, you want to act, to perform, two, how long is it going to take? Could be right away, but be on the safe side and figure it will take quite awhile before you get an acting job. You need to be able to support yourself. Good luck!!
