How To Sing?

I want to learn how to sing! Any tips?

  • Hello! Well, here's what's on my mind. I would love to learn how to sing. Sarah Brightman is my role model singer. I would love to learn to sing celtic and opera. The thing is, I'm fourteen...I don't think I could be good enough by the time I graduate to pursue a career as a singer. I have never taken singing lessons, and I can sing just fine is a choir, but if I sing alone, it's obvious I don't know notes or anything. Of course, I will start singing lessons as soon as I can, but only three year's worth of lessons might not be enough. What do you think? Am I just too old to learn how to sing and I should dream up some other career? I have always wanted to learn how to sing. I just need some advice about what I should do. Thanks in advance! Best of luck and wishes, ~Red Jane

  • Answer:

You are NEVER to young to learn how to sing. And even if you think you are to old to sing you can go to college and excel in singing. I myself take Vocal Lessons and I started going when I was about 11 and I won a scholarship when I was 13 so if you think you are not a right age for something think again. I hope you realize that if you are devoted to singing you need to study, get lessons, and make sure you tell your parents that you really are serious about singing. And make sure you know the state of your voice make sure you ask your Vocal Coach or Chorus Teacher to help you figure out if you're Soprano or Alto and all that jazz. And if you want to be on Broadway you have to be able to sing, act, AND dance... or you could just be an average singer. I am 16 so don't let anybody bring you down and tell you that you're no good. Because everyone has talent, ability and hope. So yeah I hope I don't sound to much like a old person. Haha. I hope you find this helpful! Oh yes, AND to breathe through your diaphragm my vocal coach believes that the best way is what she calls catch-breath. Hold the end of your rib cage right where the squishy part starts and the rib cage ends. Then, well, ya know when you're watching a scary movie or something scares you? And you breath in really fast? Well sit down and sit up straight with your back away from the back of the chair and do this. This is the proper way to breathe while singing. As for standing, standing takes years of practice to master singing correctly.

Sing with Your diaghram that's really important. Hold your hand over your stomach and breathe with ur belly and not your lungs (don't lift ur shoulders and your stomach should be sticking out. Push in with your hand and push out with your stomach sing one note as loud as you can and as clear as you can. This helps if you wanna sing like opera. Also holding a heavy object out with straight hands helps. Hope I helped
