Why Are Our Fingers Not the Same Length?

Is the length of my fingers important to play the piano?

  • Hello~ I'm just getting fascinated by the piano. And now I'd like to ask if the length of my fingers relates to playing it. And do you think there are any musics I can't play because of my fingers? I'm just worried about my fingers because I think they're short. Could somebody who plays piano tell me how you think about it? Thank you!!

  • Answer:

Yes, the longer the fingers the best, but that doesn't mean that you can be a better or worse pianist. One of the greatest pianist is Alicia de la Rocha and she has very small hands with short fingers, and she has been recognized as one of the best classical pianist in Spain, and in the entire world. You can see here playing. If you have the desire and the will to play the piano, go for it, do not look at your short fingers, when you need to play, those small fingers will get longer if you want to. Good luck to you!

Having long fingers makes it easier, but you can still play with short fingers. I have average fingers and have no problems playing piano what-so-ever. You may need to find a more comfortable way to play a few things and adjust to you, but you can still play whatever you want.

no it doesn't matter..what really matters is that you can play it.. about the long finger it might be better..but it really doesn't matter..

not at all it just depends on if you can actually play

If you're determined, you won't let the length of your fingers hold you back... you'll find a way! But I doubt they're so short it'll be an issue. I mean, you'd have to be a 'midget' (what's the PC term these days? 'Little person'?) or have suuuuper short fingers for it to affect you. You'll be fine. Go for it!! (Oh, and Togamon, what are you doing here?)

There will be _some_ music you can't play if you have short fingers, but it's not worth worrying about. I'll never be able to play Rachmaninoff because of my hand size, but that still leaves a whole lot of wonderful music that my hands are big enough for :)

It doesn't matter so much about the length of your fingers. It depends how far you can stretch them. When you get to about grade 8, it's important to be able to stretch the distance of an octave with at least your thumb and small finger.

Nope. Not at all. There are super tall grown men with very long fingers that play like geniuses and there are 5-year old kids with tiny little fingers that play better than adults do. So no.
