Do I have to learn classic guitar before I can learn acoustic guitar?

  • I've recently just started learning classical guitar. The music school told me that beginners must start with classical guitar. I was feeling a lot uneasy playing a classical guitar, and I wanted to change course by enrolling to an acoustic one. I was quite upset, because I dislike classical guitars... I don't really enjoy classical songs! All I listen to is either pop or rock songs, so that's why I prefer acoustic guitar to classical guitar. Is it true that I have to learn classical guitar before I can learn acoustic guitar?

    You mean steel string guitar since a classical guitar is also acoustic. There's no reason to start on a classical guitar especially if you have no interest in it. For that matter, there's no reason at all why you can't start on an electric guitar if that's where your interests lay. Find another music school.

classical guitar is hard, the reason they say that is cause they want your $$, you dont need that skill for normal acoustic music, granted its a good skill to learn, but i wouldnt learn now, i would learn the basics first then at a later date maybe lean classical once you are more comfortable with the guitar

F that. I've been playing acoustic for 6 years. (Self taught) just pick up an acoustic and play away. There's no prior skill needed, but I'm sure it would be interesting to learn to play one before the other.

nope! acoustic guitar is based more often on chords than individual string picking for a melody. I can't play classical guitar to save my life, but I can rock out on acoustic.
