I play too. I've been playing since 1966. I teach several students. So here's what I tell my students who worry about the "squeaking" sound. It happens when you pull the bow at angles to the bridge. That's because you're pulling against the string and at an angle as well, forcing the hair to scrape against the string. The best way to stop it is to practice playing parallel to the bridge at all times. I suggest practicing in front of a mirror with long bow strokes from the frog to the tip.

1. ROSIN Make sure you put enough rosin on your bow. To get rosin faster, scratch the rosin with a paper clip to get powder. Test it by using the fingerprint side of your thumb and stroking the inside of the strings (the part you DON'T play on) a lot of powder should come off. 2. STOPPING THE BOW Instead of abruptly stopping the bow at the end of a note, slow the bow down a a second before the note ends. Taking the bow off the sting (by about 1/4 in.) will also help. 3. SPEED Intead of putting presure on the bow, move it faster or play closer to the bridge to get louder sound. PLEASE RATE ME GOOD THNX!!

Learning to play the violin is fun and frustrating. I hope you have a teacher to help you. If not find one. Squeaking can be caused by Left hand fingers not pressing the strings down solid. The bow sliding up and down some instead of across the strings. Not pressing the bow firmly into the strings. Pressing the bow to hard into the strings. The bow hair slightly touching other strings. As you can see there are lots of reasons. Your teacher is the best judge of what to do.

i am a beginner violin student and when i start to screech a lot my teacher tells me to reposition myself. watch your general posture, as well as the position of your right hand and the angle of your bow- it should be parallel to the bridge
