How can I strengthen my singing voice?
-
I don't know much about notes, alto, soprano or whatever else is out there...but I would like to learn about building my voice up and such. I enjoy singing songs from artists such as Evanescence. Any advice on this? Or perhaps some sites that will give me a clue on this? Are there some exercises I can do? Thanks.

Answer:
1. Breathing. Make sure you are taking nice deep breaths. To check this, squat or plie during warm-ups. When you breathe in your low ab muscles should drop (due to lowering the center of gravity). Your belly and back will expand! Every breath should feel like that when you sing! 2. Singing posture. Make sure you are standing with your feet shoulder width apart, back/neck/head are aligned, and your chin is not sticking out. When men (and some women) sing high, they unknowingly stick their neck out to "reach" for the high notes. Make sure your head stays straight and your chin is parallel to the ground. 3. Do warm-ups that stretch your cords gradually. Start in your low range and work your way up. Make sure you are changing to your head voice when getting in the upper part of your range. You can stretch your vocal cords by pushing them by half-step higher every day you practice. Whatever you do, listen to your body, and if your throat feels strained, stop! 4. Drop your jaw! Do not sing horizontally (like you're smiling). It adds nasality to your tone. To check yourself put both hands to your face, one finger on the corners of your mouth in a resting position. When you sing (warm-ups or repertoire) do not let the corners of your mouth widen past your fingers! Make sure you are flipping over to your head voice (falsetto if a guy). And make sure you are breathing correctly. If you do not support your voice with a good deep breath, you will wear out your voice faster! You only get one set of vocal cords! Don't abuse them! The best way to become a better singer is to take voice lessons. Being in choir helps you learn the fundamentals (everything I wrote to you in your "Sarah's Yahoo Answers mini lesson"). To find a great inexpensive teacher, call or email the head of the music department at your local university. There are always students who are learning to be voice teachers or performers that will teach you for very cheap (and the quality of the lesson is just as good!). Once a degree in music is abtained, the price jumps dramatically!

The best thing that you can do on your own is to use tons of air. You can't to sing so that no one can hear you. Go ahead and belt it out. To use the most air you have to breathe better. Instead of breathing through your chest, think of breathing into your belly. When you take a breathe, try and poke out your stomach with air. This sort of breathing utilizes your diaphragm, a muscle at the bottom of your lungs that goes all way around. Practice breathing in for 8 counts and taking in as much air as you can, and then sing fairly loud note for as long as you can. Time yourself each time and with some practice you should improve.

go to chior...no lie. Everyone has their own different type of voice...not everyone can sound like amy lee but some could even be better ...or just different. dont ever push your voice or it will snap into different voice you wont want in your song or it will get scratchy. sing at the volume you feel you can go with without mistakes and work from there if you work on that slowly but surely your voice will get stronger and your tone will get louder. do your scales alot cause it helps your voice recognize pitch. for vibrato..which is the pretty humming sound good singers add to their voice...it will come naturally when ur voice gets stronger and handles different pitches and youll soon do it involuntarily

The best thing to do is get a voice teacher. It doesn't matter what you want to sing, a good teacher will be able to help you with pretty much everything you need to know how to do to keep a tune and stuff. When you get that down you can use your voice to do whatever you want.
