How/where do I publish a poem online?

Can you publish a story or poem once it has been posted on the internet?

  • if you post a story or poem etc on the net....is there a law saying you can't publish that item because other people could claim it was their work?

  • Answer:

The moment you create a piece of writing, you own the copyright to it. It is not necessary to have a notice of copyright (i.e.: © 1997 Jane Doe) for material to be copyright protected in the U.S. Once something tangible is produced, text, graphics, music, video, etc., it is automatically copyrighted but it is a good idea to register it with your federal Copyright Office. Make sure you have at least a basic understanding of the copyright laws in your country. Copyrighted works on the Net include news stories, software, novels, screenplays, graphics, pictures, Usenet messages and even email. The reality is that almost everything on the Net is protected by copyright law. What is protected on the WWW? The unique underlying design of a Web page and its contents, including: links original text graphics audio video html, vrml, other unique markup language sequences List of Web sites compiled by an individual or organization and all other unique elements that make up the original nature of the material. Many aspects of the issue of copyright and the Internet are still not resolved. This information, however, should serve as a useful guide to help you avoid violation of copyright rules and the pitfalls of unknowingly plagiarizing someone else's material. When in doubt, please consult the official copyright rules and guidelines. http://www.copyright.gov/

Uh...if you posted it on the internet, you already did publish it, legally. No, there is no law saying you can't subsequently publish it in a different form. But you are most unlikely to find a traditional publisher who is perpared to buy it - you no longer have the first publishing rights available to sell.

Lil-Chi is a moron that needs to read.

of course you can't publish it! that would be called plagiarism...

No. I'm assuming it is something YOU have written. You cannot publish things written by someone else, without permission (get it in writing). Certain hosting websites (not yours) might have a policy that you agree to when signing up that once you post something there (you writing again), you cannot publish it. So read agreements carefully before agreeing to them.

People can easily pick up anything and claim it but it doesn't make it theirs. It's yours by copyright law. Just make sure you can retain the proof of that. As long as they were published as non-exclusive on the internet, you can still publish in print but you can't sell it as "first rights".

PG

Nope. If it's your own work, you have given away first publication rights by posting it on an site open to the public. Nobody buys second publication rights when the first publication was online. So forget it. Go write something better, and this time do the publishing part right.
