What is a good way to promote a movie?

Are movie adaptations of books just a way to promote the book?

  • Ex: the hunger games - a lot of kids at my school weren't even reading it until the movie was about to come out.although I don't care for twilight, I never knew it was a book series until the movie came out. The same with the movie I am number 4.

  • Answer:

Movie Adaptations are a way for producers, etc. to capitalize on the success of a popular book. The advertising campaign has the added benefit of promoting the book because people often want to read the book before they see the movie. But, most of the recent teen books that are adapted for the screen (ie. Twilight, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Beastly, etc.) are adapted "because" they are bestsellers, not to "turn them into" bestsellers. It's all about money and merchandizing. Hope this helps.

Um... no? It's pretty much the other way round - companies that make movies make a movie that's based on a book because the book is already popular, so some of the work of marketing the movie has been done already. It's true that whenever a movie based on a book comes out, sales of the book increase, but the company that made the movie doesn't get money from the book sales.

No. Movie studios are in the business to make money off movies. They will not get any money if a book sells more; in fact the more a book sells, the more they are going to have to pay to secure the rights to it. They wouldn't bother doing any of that unless they thought the movie version would be sufficiently profitable.

Not really, A film is all about making money for the COMPANY who usually have nothing to do with the book. The company will try and promote the film and the book because if you read the book then you are likely to see the film. But generally in publicising the film they also promote the book, I suppose it is almost a by product of movie marketing.

The answer is yes and no. See a book doesn't just become a movie; the people in the movie biz seek out the rights to adapt the book into a movie. A director or producer or screenwriter is the one that reads the book and wants to turn it into a movie. yes, 90% of the time its because they think they can turn a profit, but sometimes its because that person has a passion for the book. The resulting "hype" or "promotion" of book sales is caused by the marketing and original fan base of the book. So to answer your question; to my knowledge, an author/publisher does not seek out someone to buy the movie rights to thier book willy nilly just so they can promote it. They wait for someone to come to them seeking the rights. the book's promotion is just an added bonus. The books (hunger games and twilight) already had a fan base and readers before they were ever made into movies.
