How do you get a book published?

  • If you write a book and think it might be something to get published, how do you do this? How do you find a publisher to send your book to? What's the process of getting a book published? What are the legalalities of getting it published. Once a publisher becomes interested in your book and wants to publish it, do they pay the writer (the person who wrote the book) an advancement on the book? Or does the person who wrote the book have to pay a fee? Once a book has been published, how does an author make money off of it? Thanks. Any other comments/suggestions regarding this are much appreciated!

  • Answer:

Getting your book published is a long process. You start by researching literary agents and query those who represent the kind of book you have written. Follow their submission guidelines precisely. Each will have a different set of guidelines. Once you have an agent (getting one can be a long and excruciating process; Persevere), the agent will work to sell your book to a publisher. If your book is really good or especially timely, there might be an auction, where multiple publishers bid for your book. When a publisher acquires your book, you will get an advance (a small one, probably, unless you're a famous person). This is like a down payment on the royalties you'll earn. Your agent will get a small percentage of this. Once the book is on bookstore shelves (up to two years from when the publisher acquired it), you will get a percentage of the price of each book sold. It's a small amount per book, but all put together it can add up. Most authors have to do a lot of the promotion of their books themselves, but the publisher should do some, too. It depends on a lot of factors. But the more books you sell, the more money you get. (Again, your agent will get her or his share; but remember, having an agent can get you a better advance and royalty rate, so its worth it to find one) Money should always flow toward the author. Some agents will ask you to cover certain expenses, but not before you've contracted with them. Never pay a reading fee, and never pay to have your book published. If your book is of high quality, a publisher should be willing to pay you for the right to publish it. (There are a few exceptions to this rule, but they are rare.) Like I said, it's a long process, and you'll face a lot of rejection--even the best authors were rejected more than once. But keep at it, query every agent who seems right for your book, and with luck and good timing, and a well-written book and cover letter, you will succeed. Good luck!

To get a book published you should think about getting an agent. This is an agency that only gets paid after you do.;http://www.wlwritersagency.com/ http://us.penguingroup.com/static/html/daw/submissions.html. This is place where you can enter your work without an editor

You'd send it to agents--rather than the publisher. These days, the majority of the submissions go directly through *them* first. You start off by sending them a query letter--a pitch to the agent about what your book is about and how you would best sell it to a prospective audience. If an agent accepts you, he or she pitches your book to all intererested parties involved (the publishers), and you would have to wait a bit--because selling your book to a publisher takes awhile; and the process of publishing it takes even longer. There are no real legalities to getting it published. Except that you own the rights to your book and the publisher (and agent) has equal rights to publish, promote, and market it how they see fit. Advancements on the book varies based on market demand and volitility. On a good day, you may get a $5000 advance for the first-time author. But if it's something they can really use and the subject matter in question is HOT, you could get more. But the $5K is usually average, however, it's strictly up to the publisher. Of course, since the advance counts against you, you would have to pay that back before you get any royalties. And the way you do this is SELL as many copies of your books that you can. (That's how you make money. You have to promote and market your butt off.) There is no fee to publish your book through a reputable publisher. That's only common with vanity-press printers like Publish America, lulu.com, and IUniverse. But keep in mind: Traditional publishing offers no guarantees of success. There's a lot of risk involved when you traditionally published. No guaranteed job security. Everything is based on your *ability* to be a successful salesman. If you can promote yourself well, you'll do fine. But if you can't...? You get dropped and you'll have to start over. It's simple as that. Also keep in mind one other thing: Getting your foot in the door takes a lot longer than getting published. You might spend years or even decades trying with one book after another--before someone picks you up. (With the rejections piling up in the meantime.) So just be prepared for what lies ahead. It's not as easy as some might tell you. EDIT:The Writer's Literary Agency is NOT recommended by preditors and editor's.com--for a "conflict of interest" warning. http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/pealw.htm

One option for you is to profile your work on www.worthyofpublishing.com. People can then read, rate and comment on your submitted work. If it proves to be popular, you may attract a reputable publisher willing to pay you a nice advance. This website is free for writers wanting to gain market feedback on their manuscript. Typically once published, an author earns 10% of book sales. I hope this helps in some way :-)
