What techniques are used in a novel?

As persiphone has said, there are so many techniques, too many to name without getting into a class lecture. But techniques are not what makes you great, books, for instance "the hobbit," stand on their own because of the story behind the techniques. Writing is a bit like driving a stick-shift. You have to get that clutchwork (techniques) into your muscles so you can just drive (write) without focusing on your feet.
