How is the Scarlet Letter canonical?

In The Scarlet Letter, what does Hester tell Pearl is the reason she wears the scarlet letter A?

  • In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne... What reason does Hester give Pearl for wearing the scarlet letter A?

  • Answer:

Wow. It's been 10 years since I read that book. I do remember the A is for adultery, and the red simbolizes sin (according to my old English teacher) She has to wear it to feel the shame in what she's done. But really, I don't remember the details. Sorry.
