It's supposed to be--Hedda is a brilliant, creative, and strong woman but completely staunched by the social climate (being married and therefore expected to play second fiddle to a wussy husband). When her one attempt to escape those circumstances backfires and she finds herself more trapped than before (husband is falling for a mousy pseudo-intellectual while Hedda becomes a mistress to a lecherous judge), her only escape is suicide. Successfully conveying this can be tricky, though. the one performance I saw--Hedda was played as so rotten a person that when she shot herself, I was tempted to sing, "Ding Dong! The witch is dead!"

IT IS A TRAGEDY AS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS DEFEATED/DESTROYED. "THREE SISTERS" IS ONLY A DRAMA.
