What's the role of physical chemistry in Agriculture?

Anyone want to review this essay? I don't know if i did the conclusion right...?

  • Over the years, science and technology have developed immensely. These advances have caused a tremendous amount of change in our world and society. Change for better, change for worse, change that is highly beneficial to our human race, but also change that that has made us humans more cautious as to how we survive in our world. As the years go on, such activities of change will continue to occur and cause even greater discrepancy between the good and bad of the advancement of science and technology. There is no question that there has been huge leaps in the development of science and technology with new things invented that we could have never imagined, but has it been for the better or for the worse? The twentieth century saw more momentous change than any previous century. These changes occurred very quickly and affected many people around the world in many different ways. Basically, a lot of what happened was scientists, inventors, and engineers took the great inventions of the nineteenth century and built onto them. These additions created major developments in the areas of agriculture, communication technology, and transportation. Our world has become more interconnected and knowledgeable due to all of these advancements. The twentieth century marked the transition from the railroad to the automobile and airplane. There was huge production of the automobile and the building of roads and highways which made it possible for Americans to travel around the United States faster by car. Also in the twentieth century, radio and television brought news and entertainment into the home. Furthermore, close to the end of the twentieth century, the World Wide Web linked people, news and entertainment by personal computer. Lastly, an era of scientific combined with farming was introduced in the twentieth century. The techniques of animal and plant breeding combined with the science of genetics concluded to the production of large varieties of crops and livestock to suit the consumers. Many other advancements in all areas of science were made as well but let us not forget the advancements made in nuclear science. These advancements introduced a whole new line of weaponry to be used in many wars and conflicts. From new ways of transportation, to new ways of killing people, there were many advancements in the twentieth century that no one could have ever comprehended. To a large extent the nuclear arms, and weaponry race was driven by scientists. “They kept on designing new types of weapons, not because of any credible requirement - arsenals a hundred times smaller would have sufficed for any conceivable deterrence purpose - but mainly to satisfy their inflated egos, or for the intense exhilaration experienced in exploring new technical concepts” (Sir Joseph Rotblat). Does this sound like scientists have been responsible with their new discoveries and developments? Many have, but some scientists advancements have been deemed irresponsible. Scientists that were involved in the war, such as Fritz Haber, Anthony Fokker, and Hiram Maxim are some of the few. These very intelligent scientists contributed to the killing of other`s in war which has caused controversy over the years as to whether they have used their ideas and knowledge responsibly. Anthony Fokker started an aviation company in Wiesbaden, Germany. His first aircraft, Spin I, made a couple of 100 yard flights at the beginning of December, 1910. However, later that month it crashed into a tree and was destroyed. His second aircraft, Spin II, also crashed in May, 1911. His third effort, Spin III, was more successful and was sold to the German military. Hiram Maxim was an engineer who took out several patents including those for gas appliances and electric lamps. He went to the Paris Electrical Exhibition in 1881 where he met a man who told him "If you wanted to make a lot of money, invent something that will enable these Europeans to cut each other's throats with greater facility." Maxim then went on to invent the first portable machine gun called the “Maxim Machine Gun” which was adopted by the British Army. Fritz Haber was a German chemist, who won the Nobel Prize for his development in industrial chemistry. Although, being such an intelligent chemist, he played a huge role in the development of chemical warfare in world war one. All of these scientists made great contributions to the development of science and technology, but their intelligence and ideas have been used in aiding militaries in their objective to destroying other human beings. Outstanding research in science, physical and biological, has expanded our horizon immensely. It has given us a better understanding of the structure of matter and of the universe. It has also brought better awareness of evolution and the nature of life in our world. Technology, the application of science, has made fantastic advances that have affected us in a good way in almost every part of our lives including better

  • Answer:

Your essay exceeded the maximum length allowed for questions so we can't read the conclusion. I think your opening question, "There is no question that there has (sic) been huge leaps in the development of science and technology with new things invented that we could have never imagined, but has it been for the better or for the worse?" is essentially unanswerable. Stringing together examples doesn't prove anything, because there is always a counterexample (better transportation=planes are good; strategic bombing of civilians=planes are bad). You're really asking a deep philosophical question about what is good for people and society. John Stuart Mill and Ayn Rand (spelling?) and others gave their answers and could have argued about the role of science and technology in creating what they considered a better world. Without defining what is better and what is worse I don't think you can reach any conclusion about whether science and technology are positive or negative.
