What literary techniques are used in the novel "Hoot?

In the novel emma, jane austen used different techniques. what are they and what are the narrative techniques?

  • Answer:

You are very lucky, I happen to be doing a part of my MA in Eng lit on this very topic :-) You are right that Jane Austen uses complex narrative techniques in Emma; all I can do is give you some starting points. I don't know what you need this information for. 1) Free Indirect Discourse--look for passages in Emma that are telling about her thoughts indirectly; that is, it isn't a transcription of her thoughts but the narrator mediating her thoughts for us--look at Emma's views of Harriet Smith for an example of this. 2) Dialogue--Jane Austen was a master of this, so much is revealed by what they SAY and don't say, for that matter. Consider the way Miss Bates runs on--what she says reveals more than you think at first glance. 3) Judicious use of letters; more so in P&P but also in Emma, think of Frank Churchill's letter for example. Hope this helps!
