Try Writer's Digest "2006 Guide to Literary Agents" The Writer's Digest reference books have been a great help to me as a new writer.

Writer's Digest is good. Even better, I think, is the Writer's Market; it lists more agents, and may have more in your specific area (or area of literature). It's an enormous tome, and may run you $40-50, but the extra info that will help you refine your skill in there is totally worth it. Two or three contests later, it will have paid for itself ten times over.
