What's your philosophy on writing?
-
I'll give my part in this if it helps. Some people would say that this is a juvenile and unprofessional outlook on writing itself, but I see writing as something free and expressive. Writing the story down is the first and foremost important part of writing, because that's also the beautiful part of it. =) The editing, revising, consideration of cliches and character development are secondary, although also vital to the writing process. Also, it's always important to have fun with it as well - let the imagination (and pen/keyboard) flourish on the pages! Otherwise, your writing will not have life to it. Just keep in mind that this is something that keeps you writing and writing to your heart's content, no matter the obstacles. So then writers, what's your personal philosophy on writing? =)

Answer:
My personal philosophy on writing is that it has to come from the heart, not just the mind. If it's only the mind, there is no emotion to it. And a really good piece of writing is always full of emotion. You don't always have to enjoy it, sometimes it may even be hard for you to write it, but it's always so successful if you really put yourself into it. Imagination is vital, also. Without it, you'd have no story. You don't always have to know exactly what it is that you're writing when you start it. In fact, I think that's the fun of it. Not knowing where you're going, but just letting your writing take you there.

Well, I pretty much agree with you and that's why I read European Classic literature, chiefly Russian but some Persian (Iranian) and Arabic as well. Most American literature and especially contemporary works hold little value for me. Here's the difference, using the Russian masters as an example, versus the American authors. A Russian writes to tell the story (as you said) and it's all about the JOURNEY... then the chips fall wherever they fall in regard to readership. With American literature, it's all laid out... a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's all about the DESTINATION and, thus, commercially-oriented. It's largely inside-the-box thinking. If Tolkien would have submitted *The Lord of the Rings* to an American publisher they would have laughed him out of the USA. Read Gogol's http://www.amazon.com/Souls-Everymans-Library-Nikolai-Gogol/dp/1400043190/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301269143&sr=8-1 -- he didn't even bother to finish *Dead Souls* and it's *still* one of the greatest books I've ever encountered!
